2.4L replacement
Tuesday, March 10, 2009 7:55 PM
Hello everyone,

I recently blew the 2.4L engine in my 97 Sunfire convertible. I've looked absolutely everywhere, but I can't find another 2.4 for less than $1300.

I'd really like to put another motor in the car and sell it asap, as I have recently bought another car, and really need to get it out of the way.

Are there ANY swaps that are relatively simple and cheap to do into this car, or am I going to have to keep looking? I'm not looking to build the car with a 3.8 or anything, I just want to make it reliable and drivable again. As far as I can tell, the 2.2L from the base J body is a real headache to put into it. Is there any motor that isn't?

Thank you very much!

keep looking for your 2.4L, or have the one you got rebuilt. there are other GM cars out there that use that 2.4L as well, besides the j-bodies.

And, it would help if we knew where you were. I used www.car-part.com to locate 2.4 engines. I live in the Inland Northwest and found several engines within 100 miles. (Ended up buying one.)

Yeah, I've put a few ads in the local papers, looking for another one. And I know for sure that it came in the J-bodies, as well as Grand Ams, Aleros, Malibous and a few others.

A guy called me today saying he has that exact motor in his Buick, and I could have the whole thing for $200. I show up and it's a 2.8 V6. He tells me "close enough, it came in the Sunfire GTs". No. No it does not.

I live in South-Eastern B.C. a couple hours north of Spokane Wa. Haven't been able to find anything at the wreckers around here, but I'll check Car-part.

Thanks for the help so far guys!

Devan, there are several in the Seattle area (Kent, WA, but they're expensive). I got one from a guy in Ephrata (WA) and he had another at his yard in Okanogan (WA, Randy's Auto Wrecking). That was only a couple of weeks ago. Good luck.

were they a decent price? I have a feeling shipping might kill me...

Devan, the one I got from Randy's in Ephrata was $650 and they charged me $50 to ship it to Spokane. Sadly, I didn't see any more engines nearby when I searched this morning. There was one in Spokane a month ago for $550, but it had near 120k miles on it. Most I see on the search that are alleged to be "good running" engines have near 100k miles. My original plan for the one I bought was to put in a pair of secret cams, a timing set and water pump, and have it ready to drop in at a future date. But, the engine in my car (with 104k miles) runs fine and shows no sign of needing any attention. I'll keep checking and will post back if I see anything nearby that's reasonable. - Mark

Thanks Mark, I really appreciate that!

I got a call from a guy today who says he has a 2.4L for me, for $500. It's from a 2000 Malibu. I know the 2.4L was slightly reworked in 99. Any idea whether the engine will work, and what (if anything) I'd need to change to get it to work? What about a Malibu to Sunfire swap? Any changes need to be done for that? Motor mounts, wiring harness, etc?

i think in 2000 (and some 99) the 2.4 had no EGR, and something about the knock sensor i think. other than that it will just drop in
