well my 97 2.2L, does not have one, and i want to put one in, so how would i in stall it to make it work?
what car do you drive, if you have your profile updated it could help us out.
probably a cavalier cause i think the sunfires all had them
if you have a 97 2.2 i beleve you can use 95-97 cavalier cluster Z24 would work

if you have the 3 speed, you can get one out of a blue interior cav, but you have to do the pass-lock re-learn which isn't hard. turn the key to the "on" position and wait 10 minutes untill the "theft lock" light turns off, we just did this last night to flat black cav's new cav.
^ Why would it have to be out of a blue interior cav?
It works out of any cav, staying in the same year-group, so more information is needed before we can determine WHICH years work, but it definitely doesn't have anything to do with the color interior...

Buy stuff from CarCustoms Ebay! Won't be disappointed!
i tried putting a tach in my 95 Cavy, I hooked it up the same way i did my same year 2.2 s-10 got it all hooked up started it and rpms were half what the should be, come to find out i need some sort of an adapter to fix the signal. I should just put in the z24 cluster because it is just 'plug and play' so to speak. Am i right about that?
Any why the heck did they put tachs in autos but not 5 speeds???

I just seem to see them with the tach for the 3-speeds with the blue interior more often than I see them in the tan or charcoal. I honestly don't think I've seen one tan or charcoal interior cav with the 3-speed and a tach.

Yeah, it'll cost you at least $40 for the adapter(I'm talkin about the Autometer 9117, the RKsport one is junk) plus the tach you'll have to get and the hassle of running the wires. Whereas, a cluster is about $50 from a junkyard and all you have to do is take the dash out, which isn't hard at all. To answer your second question, all I can figure is GM didn't care about patterns, they just threw 'em in wherever lol.
The 3-speed ones are very hard to find, I've yet to see one in the yards compared to the multiple times I've seen 4-speeds and manual ones. At the junkyard I got mine from, the interchange was 97-98 so a 96 might work, it might not. Just make sure the yard has a warranty, in case anything goes wrong.
ya like b-rad (megapark) said, and a few people on here have mentioned just get out out of the same year group, plug in the wires, turn the key in the on position for 10 minutes (sometimes you need to do it twice) as in my case thats what happened, then the theft light will stop flashing, and blamo you have sucessfully swaped clusters lol....and for b-rad (megapark) the last two cavalier's i've owned have been 3 speeds, with the tan interior and they had a tach...
Swap to a cluster with a tach on it.
the way you could put one on is if you get a tach adapter from autozone or something and hook that up also thats how it would work too
cheaper geting the cluster and looks nicer too.
hey guys this is what i saw when looking for a cluster. 1995 is not interchangeable with 96-98??? Is this right or not. several salvage yards told me this.
I went to my local junkyard and looked for one not much of a selection of parts. I only found one from a aunfire and i was just like what the hell its worth a shot. Plugs are different.
So I called everywhere and could not find one.
well i can not find a 95 with a tach or even hear of one. now i know the z-24 had one but i did not see a 1995 z-24. I need help finding lol
u can buy aftermarket tachs with plug wire adapters that pick up a signal they work run of #1 cyl right after the boot going into the head
96-97 z cluster works with yours. if you dont mind having PRND321 instead of PRND21. the 1 is just not used PRND are all the same and 3 and 2 are 2 and 1
i have a tan interior cavy, with a 3 speed 2200 and a tach on my dash!
came like that from the factory...its a base model sport package. u get
tach, pinstripe, spoiler, 15" steelies instead of 14", CD player, i think thats it.
i mite be forgetting some thintgs, but i forget. haha
thats what the dealer told my dad when he got it new at leat, now i gots it!
its a 2000 cav

Just out of curiosity, why are you replying to an almost 10 month old thread?

There is a write up about this I did it on my 96 2.2 cavalier all you need is two diode from radio shack and you hook them up to two of the computer wires I forget witch ones might be orange and yellow not sure then wrap the diodes together and put your tach wire on it it works very well i ran it like that for a whil. It let's the tach read it but it fools the computer so it won't throw a code it's pretty much what the adapter does
By the way it was one of the autometer tach but sure they all will work
