Okay guys, I have a problem. I have tried almost everything but I am probably missing the most obvious thing. Now to describe the problem.
I have a 97 Pon. Sunfire. 2.2l 4 Door Se. 5 Spd. Just going over 135,000Miles.
I love this car i have had it for 2years, The car had 98,000 Miles when I bought it. I have always been able to get around 35-37mpg on highway and low 30s in city. The car has never given me many troubles until recently.
One night while coming home the check light went on, the next morning I checked it and it pulled a P1441 - Evap System Fault. Flow during Non-Purge Event. So I pulled the Evap purge and checked it, sure enough it was bad and I replaced it. I had to wait for the part for about 2 weeks though before I could change it out. During this time I noticed my gas mileage drop off. About low 20s in the city and not even getting into the 30s on the highway. So I went on dealing with it till I changed the purge out. Once I did the mileage still stayed low. I do alot of driving and this is killing me. I have changed the plugs twice, the wires, the coils. Nothing helped. Then I started noticing a miss. Not a hard miss like a totally dead cylinder but more like a plop or sputter. The car doesn't seem to be under power at all and it doesn't have a problem stalling. Also the miss is not strong enough to cause a check light. Now i pulled it into my shop the other day and hooked up a scan tool and checked some PIDS. O2 is switching fine. Long Term fuel Trim is at -10 and a/f is at 14.6. No codes or stand-out problems. I then decided to put down the scan tool and check some things the old way. I hooked up a spark tester and checked each wire. All fired fine with a 25Kv gap. But then when I went up to 30Kv things got sketchy. Cylinder One was still fine but Cylinder Two seemed to miss alot as did Cylinder four. Cylinder three fired okay with an occasional miss. Now a question for anyone who knows. The stock coils should be able to clear a 30Kv gap right? I thought these coils were rated at 50Kv. I have my stock coils and the replacements I got from a shop in town(factory coils). Both sets have around 5500ohms at the secondary and .5ohms at primary which are both spec. No matter which set I have on the car, the car still has the miss. Now, could I possibly just have two sets of bad coils or could it be something else? The PCM obviously thinks the engine is running rich which is why its leaning it out. And for some reason I didn't thing to hook up a 5-Gas tester when I had it in my shop. The thing I was maybe thinking and PLEASE correct me if this is wrong. Could the O2 possibly be giving the PCM a false rich reading? Causing the PCM to lean out the mixture, with more voltage being required this would cause the coils to miss randomly? I'm stumped right now. Its probably because I'm thinking to far into things. But please if you can think of anything or know of someone who had the same problem PLEASE tell me.
Thanks guys I really appreciate it!
P.S. The cam and crank sensors are reading correctly and the EVAP Purge valve passes.
