Help with cluster?
Thursday, March 20, 2008 8:46 PM
Alright, I have a 96 sunfire with a 2.2 ohv 5 speed, and I just bought a 99 z24 5 speed that was in a crash. I am doing the research on the engine swap from a 96 2.2 to 99 2.4, and I have hit a little problem. In my 96, the cluster has analog odometer (rolls up mileage), and trip counter. In the 99, it is a digital odometer and trip counter. Anyone know if I can keep the 96 cluster and have the odometer work, or do I need to swap the cluster aswell? Thanks!

One I have now (Except not for an auto)

Notice the difference between the odometers?

Or will I need one like this? (except not for an auto)

It'll work just fine with the old cluster.

Car is sitting in pieces in the garage, waiting for the clutch to go in. I got in a bad motorcycle accident a month ago and I've got another 8 weeks minimum before I'll be able to do any work on it unfortunately.

Isn't there a thing with swapping Sunfire and Cavalier clusters in the pre-00 cars? I thought the physical size is different, and maybe the wiring/plug?

^ I missed the sunfire/cavalier part... Yes, its physically different, there are also additional wires on the sunfire cluster that aren't on the cavalier one. However, what you can do, if you want to keep the mileage, is to get a 96-98 analog cluster and swap the tumblers out (do NOT try to move the tumblers when swapping). Its easier than it sounds.

I just read this thread for the first time, but from what I see in the original post, he's asking about swapping the engine, not the cluster, and was wondering if it was going to be a problem because of the difference in odometers. I would say no. The engine should wire the same, and the cluster will get the same info from the ECM. You shouldn't have to touch your cluster during the swap. You should actually be able to just swap the engine, ecm, and harness fully intact from the donor car, and not even have to do any splicing. It's a very plug-n-play swap.
