I am about to change the engine on my 2002 Z24. I was told that the engines changed quite a bit from the late 90's to the 00's.
I hear the block and interals are the same, but much of the bolt-ons and brackets are different, and it is a pain to convert between the two.
Can anyone tell me exactly what the difference is? what all will i be looking at if i wanted to drop a 98 engine in my 2002 for instance....
(ps my 2.4 has the GMPP supercharger on it, and i know this was only designed for the 2000+ but i have read that it can be made to work by upgrading some of the items above to 2000+ parts.... so again, anyone able to confirm or deny any of this for me?)
I can find a TON of older 2.4's but they only made this "new style" in 2001 and 2002... and 2002 is known for bad wrist pins, which is why i need a new engine... so i would rather not get another 2002.... so that only leaves me with 2001 2.4L and that isnt much of a selection.

that is all????
that seems very trivial.
i was told by a guy recently "you will have to strip both engines down to a long block, and swap all the parts to make the older one work in your 02."
I have seen longblock engines listed as replacements for 96-02. so that leads me to think that they must not have changed too much over the whole span....
But again, this is a longblock, and still fits the guys story above.
I just want to know what all i have to do if i buy a complete 2.4L from an older car... say a 97 GrandAm... to make it drop right in to my 02 Z24.
the boost forum says something about the starter being different, and also mentioned the EGR as brought up above by shifted...
but this hardly seems like "stripping down to a long block"
anyone else able to chime in here with more details?

I still think you should just pull yours and have it rebuilt. It may cost you but atleast you know what you have.
FORGET GIRLS GONE WILD WE HAVE GOVERNMENT SPENDING GONE WILD!
you CAN put the older engine in the car... and it will work just fine. just reuse all of the accessory's and such off your 02 motor. just take off the fuel system from the engine and tie it up off to the side somewhere in the engine bay, your going to need to use the newer injectors that came with your car. they will go right into the same exact place as the older ones and work just fine.
egr issue-just re-use your stock exhaust manifold and gasket.
knock sensor issue- have a threaded plug made that will screw into the older block and then drill out the center and thread it to use the newer knock sensor.
quad4forum has info on this. not to much is different
lower compression 96-99 9.5 mid99-03 9.7
egr was removed on 00+ same exact heads just different intake and exhaust manifolds
00+ used high impedence injectors 96-99 used low impedence
knock sensor is different like zyaaa said either that or weld a nut over the hole to hold the smaller sensor
everything should be exact except some identification cast
im certain of this because ive already done this choose the welding nut idea tho thing ran great had some motor failure from running the crap out of my motor and i think i got one of those motors built on monday or friday cause i had nothing but problems w/ it in the 97z but like i said if you google it or check quad4forum they'll have the info. should be the same.
ok.... i think i am going to pull my engine and supercharger out... and do a rebuild on the whole thing.....
but in the mean time.... i found a killer deal on a 99 2.4l out of a grand am with 110k miles on it.
I just wanted to again verify the differences....
if i am using the entire engine, just pulling one out dropping the other in....
what all would i need to do to make this 99 engine work in my 02?
this is only temporary to buy myself time to work on my engine and supercharger at my own pace. and not be rushed and forced to skimp due to budget and time constraints.
so again, pulling out my 02 2.4L with supercharger and all that goes with it.... dropping in a straight 100% stock 2.4L from a 99 grand am....
what all should i be looking out for? or can i expect to have to deal with?
