i read somewhere on here last night and i can't remember which one it was in now, someone posted that they had gotten a ticket for doing 137 in a 70 and something to the effect of your lucky the cop pulled in behind you and not in front of you. 1. our speedometers don;t even go to 137 they only go to 110, 2 if he went past like 106 or 107 the governor would kick in the engine would shut itself off and the cop cruiser would be able to catch up to him in nothing flat . I just found the entire post interesting doesn;'t make sense to me how he could even get the car to 137 unless he disabled the governor.

The motor doesn't technically "shut off" at 107... but yes the goveror has to be eliminated one way or another to excede 107. If my car makes enough power, I could do 137. But with HPTuners out now, it is even easier for people to do this.

oh ok my bad Brian i thought i had seen somewhere that if you exceed 107 or 108 the engine would cut out maybe i'm mistaken.

Basically, it works like this:

Embedded within the code of the ECM is the control for the speed limiter as set by GM.

What this bit of code does is based on an input from the vehicle speed sensor, will shut off the fuel injectors once the vehicle reaches a ground speed of 106 MPH. Once speed is reduced to 104, the control to the injectors is turned back on, allowing the operator of the vehicle to reduce to a safe speed.

This safeguard was put in place due to the overall design of the vehicle. The brakes, suspension and tires were not designed for speeds in excess of 100 MPH. Given that there is a variance allowed by the DOT and NHTSA for speedometer readings, it can be inferred that GM has placed this limitation a small amount higher to compensate.

Without altering the code contained within the ECM or by disabling the input by other means, it is impossible to achieve speeds over the limiter.

Not ground speed... rather its indicatedspeed.
Changing tire size to larger or smaller diameter will change actual speed the cut-off happens, but it will still be indicated as 108mph.

thanks for pointing that out.

When I wrote that it was under the assumption the car is in stock trim, stock tires, no variance in the speedo...

I did it on my second gen (lasted about 5 mins before I put it back.... thats to fast for those cars) so I know what he is talking about.... but thats one of the top 2 things not to talk about on this site anymore...

Speed limiter removal or street racing = locked thread.

for the most part anymore. (just to let the newbies know)

^^ they've been locked before as well, just all depends on what's been mentioned in the threads...

Most of the time though, they just get moved to the "Moderators" forum

Re: governor

I've done it in mine too, but like the guy above said, quickly went back to stock. The car is def. not meant for speeds over 173km/h, or 107mph.
Re: governor

car is barely made for 107. my Z24 used to make me white knuckle at 85ish.

GO PATS!!!
Re: governor

Only reason it dont work on my car is because the stock PCM is no longer in control of the fuel or ignition systems. Only the speedometer.
But I still dont drive it that fast, unless it would happen to do so on a pass down the track.

Re: governor
Tuesday, October 09, 2007 6:29 AM
^^^Pretty much how I feel...

Whenever I get around to tuning my car... Just because the thing will be capable of doing 140mph... doesn't mean I'm going to drive it that fast on the street (the track might be a different story)

There is a certain burdon of personal responsibility that people should follow... but since most people dont... thats why are cars are governed. If your responsible it doesn't need to be there... but more oftan than not... that isn't the case... wich is kinda sad.. and annoying when you think about it.

If you can tell your going to fast..... slow the hell down.... the computer shouldn't have to do it for you.
