brake problem

went to take my 98 sunfire for a drive today and i went to put on the brakes and they locked up like it would if you pulled the ebrake just the rear wheels all new spring kit and shoes in the back drums maybe wore out but that wouldn' cause this i don't think. n e ideas

forgot to mention that it goes to normal after a couple times of hittin the brakes.

Your drums may be worn beyond its maximun, better fix that soon.

I suppose that could cause it. but I find that hard to believe that you wore the drums out.

On many of our J's that happens, maybe not as severe as you are describing, but they sometimes lock up. If you do a search on rear breakes locking up , im sure you will find something. This is an ongoing aguement on what causes it. I think it is due to excessive brake dust build up in the drum. I will pull the drums , hose it out with a garden hose and it will be fine. But it all depends on what kind of quality the break shoes are also. some make lots of dust.

A couple of things:
Make sure that you put the brakes together correctly, short shoe goes in the front(brake lining is shorter on that one), and dont swap the adjusters from side to side, they say L and R on them. R is the pass side.

Make sure that your wheel cylinders arent leaking fluid on the shoes, that will cause the wheels to lock up also.
