Ok here is the deal. My 99 2.2 has been acting strange. When you fill it up with gas and then drive about 100 miles or so it will start to hesitate. The care has 160,xxx miles on it so I suspect that it is the fuel filter clogging. Well the other day I came to a stop light and the car hesitated then it died. I tried starting it and I don't get nothing. I hear the hum of the fuel pump so I know that it is working. I checked all the fuses and they look good. I took the starter off and had it tested and found that it was bad! So I replace the starter today and try to crank it......Nothing! No clicking from the stater or anything. I did notice that the anti theft light is on when I try to start it. Is this normal? I didn't remember seeing this before. My car does not have key fobs for the doors nor does it have an alarm. So next I get the volt meter out. I turn the car on and check to make sure I am getting voltage at the fuse for the ignition. This checks out fine. So does anyone have a clue what to check next? Coil pack maybe? Not sure what else to check.
Sorry for being long winded but I hate it when someone don't explain the situation.
Well I checked the coil pack and I was getting an OHM reading with the coils off of the plate that they were connecting to. I was just testing from the plug off the wire harness to the post and I got a reading. When I plugged in the coil pack to the plate I did not get a reading. How do you properly check the coil pack to see if it is working?
I just got done for the night and I think I might have found the problem. I am not getting voltage to the small wire on the starter when you try to crank the car. So I am thinking it might be either the wire or the ignition. Now I have to trace down the wire!
The purple starter wire is the one that turns the starter. that wire starts at the ignition switch as a yellow, it goes to either a neutral safety switch on an automatic or a clutch pedal switch. the wire turns to purple there and proceeds to the starter. Check the yellow wire on the ignition switch in the start position for 12v if thats ok and you dont have 12v at the purple wire on the starter then either you have a broken wire or the safety switch is junk.
If you have had the starter safety recall performed you need to make sure that the relay that is attached to the radiator support is operating . In the case that you have the relay check for starter power going in and out pin 30 and 87. This should directly be fed by the larger starter post. And on pins 85 and 86 , one will be ground and the other will be the purple 12v from the ignition switch in start position. Pins are on the relay .

I did have the starter safety recall performed. I was wondering what the hell the relay on the radiator support was! I will check that tonight. Thanks for the all the info. Now that I know what all to check hopefully I can hunt down the problem.
Thanks again!
Hey Joe this is what I found. The relay for the safety recall did the following. 85 is the ground, 86 has constant power, 87 has nothing, and 30 is the purple wire and only shows .20 on the volt meter. Even when you try to crank the car. Does this sound like a bad relay or the purple wire is messed up? Thanks for the help.
7719 recall harness
colors
Black 85 is ok (ground)
purple 86 should be hooked up to the purple wire from the ignition switch start position (start position hot only)
red 87 should be attached to the fuse link from the large starter post (hot all time)
red 30 should be attached to the starter
red 30 should be attached to the fuse link from the large starter post (hot all time)
red 87 should be attached to the starter
******87 and 30 labels can be interchanged since these are the actual switch wires
It almost sounds like its wired wrong from what you are telling me. Double check the posts and wires to be sure. If what your saying is all correct then your not getting power to turn on the relay.
Check the fuseable link that feeds the relay, probe the wire after the funny looking heat shrink coating for 12v.
How the relay works is it takes a low amperage source into pin 86, along with the ground of 85, which makes an electromagnet. When this magnet is energized it pulls on the metal of the high amperage switch causing the contacts of 30 and 87 to close.
So 30 and 87 are like a light switch and 85 and 86 are the force that turns it on and off.
There are double pole relays also that have an extra center 87a pin. when the 85-86 magnet isnt energized 87a is connected to 30 That is until the 85-86 magnet is energized, in which then it connects 87 to 30 instead of 87a.
You can bypass the relay to see if its bad. Just take the purple wire from the ignition switch and attach it directly to the small starter post.
Or you can jump the starter with a screwdriver by touching the small post to the large post with all of the wires on it. Hold the screwdriver firmly against the posts to avoid excessive sparking. This tests the starter.

Hmm. Ok. When I get a chance I will take another look at it. I will snap some pics also. Sounds like the relay is hooked up incorrectly! Thanks Joe!
Hey I am just getting back around to looking into this and I think that I am going to look into the theft system. I just noticed that when I turn the key on the theft light stays on. If you turn the key to the on position shouldn't the theft light go off? Can someone check and see if you turn your key to on if the theft light stays on or does it go off?
Another thing. Can I do this to my car to bypass the theft system? Has anyone tried this?

The reason I think it might be the theft system is I traced all the wiring and it all seems good from the starter. Recently before my car quit on me it would start to hesitate and sometimes it would die. It would then restart. This would happen every now and then. The day that it quit I came out of school and it died at the first light. It then started by acted strange. I then got most of the way home and it died at another stop light then it would not start again. I opened the doors and tried to start it multiple times. At this time I noticed the theft light on.
