have a 95 cavy with auto trans it has pr n d 2 1 on the gear selector. now my ? is that should be a 3t40e correct? so only a 3 spd? well my trans makes 3 gear changes and has a bottom pan not a side pan. i think it a 4t40e am i correct? next ? how hard and how much money involved in replacing a tcc solenoid? mine appears to be shot! thanks a bunch guys
well, i would assume that the three shifts you feel would be two actual shifts and the tcc actually locking up. as for replacing the solenoid, i've never done it, but if you're gonna do it yourself, it would be cost of parts/ any tools you dont have.

You have a 3t04. There's no 3t04e, because the e stands for electric. And the 4t04e shifts electronically obviously.
My solenoid went out on mine. I'm guessing you had the old symptom of the car staying in OD coming off the highway, stalling and dying shortly thereafter. As a cheaper fix, I just unplugged the harness in the front of the transmission with the blue plug and never had the problem again. You won't get any CEL's or codes from it either.

The electronic shift is a 4t40e not a 3t04e .started in 99 I believe, possible option in 98. I dont know what the 3 spd # is probably 3t40 dont know for sure. your 99 is definetly a 3spd and has a side cover that the solonoid is under.
( auto 3 spd only)
If you change the lock up converter switch, change the valve also. I have chaned a few in the past and twice I had to take the cover back off and change the valve too. Its not a whole bunch more for the valve, so I would change them both. If its not locked up currently you can just unplug it on the front of the tranny. If its stuck in you have to change it. If you just unplug it you may notice a difference in fuel mileage. But otherwise wont hurt anything.

Yes that's what I was saying. There is no 3t04e. 3t04 = 3spd. 4t04e = electronic 4spd.

from the faq:

1995-1999 model years, 5 speed cars all used the "Isuzu" transmission, regardless of engine. Again, the bellhousing is different between the 2.3L/2.4L and 2.2L engines, and is not easily interchangeable. Despite being designed by Isuzu, this transmission was ultimately built by GM and uses weaker parts than the Isuzu-built ones used in their cars. (Yes, you can find and swap them)
1995-2005 model years, 4 speed automatic cars all used the Hydramatic 4T40E transmission. It is easy to tell, if your shifter reads "PRND321" then this is the transmission you have. It is an electronically-controlled transmission, and as such can use electronic hacks such as the B&M Shiftplus or Autotrans Interceptor to adjust line pressure.
1995-2002 model years, 3 speed automatic cars all used the Hydramatic 3T40 transmission. It is easy to tell, if your shifter reads "PRND21" then this is the transmission you have. It is a VacuumWhat you're engine is under, when it isn't boosted.-controlled transmission, and as such CANNOT use electronic hacks such as the B&M Shiftplus or Autotrans Interceptor. This is the strongest transmission found in J-body cars, but also the slowest.
as well, the chiltons and haynes manuals refer to it as the 3t40, which has the same exact pan as my 89, which is listed as a th125. now, care to tell me its not the same again?

Come on Abe, You keep typing an 04 instead of a 40.
Yes I know the 3t40 doesnt have an e. I was pointing out that you keep switching the #'s around.
Any way I think we answered Andrews question.

Guys how long are you going to beat the stick about this!!! Holy crap. When i got my tranny rebuilt, there were part numbers for the 3t30 and the TH 125/Th125c. Both diferent, so i aquired about it and i was told that they are similar but not the exact same. There some differences with something internally or something. Something about the converter lock up. So i assumed that they were different trannys. I am not new to J-bodies so dont try and show me up. I ahve been out of the game for abit but i am still apart of it.

Most likely the 3t40 has a PWM module for TCC lockup. That way you're SUPPOSEDLY not going to feel the converter when it goes into lockup.
