I just picked up a 2000 Z24.
The previous owner had been diligent with maintenance but the car had never seen anything but dino oil.
I have always used Mobil 1 Full Syn on my Camaro and Blazer and would like to do the same for the Cavalier.
However the Z24 has just over 70K miles on it - could I experience any problems with the switch?
Thanks for your replies.
i say go for it, there are a lot of myths about it but i think penzoil did a study on it and shouldnt be a problem.
I would do it, but not with Mobil 1.

Why not Mobil 1? Expensive I know but I trust that before alot of other oil.

I have seen a few J motors (not just one) spin rod bearings on that oil. They also were running Fram oil filters (which I refuse to use). Could be either one. I have always use Castrol oil in all my cavy's (5 of them). Only one had motor problems (and that one was a rebuild before I got it). I use Castrol syn myself. It has been GREAT to me!!! Also a friend who swore by Mobil 1 as well. It was his 97 Z24 that spun a bearing. Now he was low on oil (a quart) and had punched it. I admit probably was why. When we opened it up (the timing chain cover) we saw how stained it was from the oil. He could not believe it. I had never seen a J motor like that. So he switched away as well. Again I'm not directing faulting Mobil 1. I do nt like it, never had sense it came out. I realize these other 2 cars could have been something else, but it might not have been as well. Castrol has worked for me, and I'm extremely had on my cars!!!!

I have always had a difficulty beleiving that there are that amount of differences in oil - enough to take out an engine......seems illogical to me.
I can see that there is a definete difference between mineral and synthetic but between different brands is another story.
To each their own.
I've always used Mobil 1 and it's been good for me.
royal purple FTW!!!

My Sunfire 2.4 was switched to synthetic at somewhere around or a little before 80,000 miles and it's fine. For what it's worth, my Subaru was switched to Synthetic around 105,000 and it's also just fine. We're running Mobil 1 synth in all 3 of our cars, which includes his '01 2.4 as well.
I switched mine to synthetic at 90k. Everything has seemed fine since then, the only problem was the EVAP code, but that has nothing to do with switching to syn.
it wont hurt your engine or the seals to use synthetic oil after 70k but on an engine over 110k this thinner oil will slip past your seals and compression rings causing oil leaks and a driveability problem
Displacement= 2.2L
Valve Train= OHV
Bore & Stroke= 3.50 x 3.46
Compression Ratio= 9 to 1
Net HP @ RPM= 125 @ 5200
Maximum Torque Ft Lbs @ RPM= 135 @ 4000
Fuel System= MFI
Normal Oil Pressure: psi @ 3000 RPM= 56
The only problem i've seen are when leaks have developed, gotten plugged by sludge, and then the technolube has clesared out the sludge.
Mobil 1 synthetic since 3000 miles (now pushing the 100k), and K&N oil filter for me

I had a 92 z24 with the 3.1 in it..Bought it with 50 thousand km on it..Switched to Mobil1and all was good..Then I put in castrol synthetic car was running well all of a sudden a bad knocking noise...Went back to my shop dumped the oil out refilled with with mobil1..Noise was still there not as bad..Well at 400 thousand km the motor finally gave up...This motor was all stock never opened up once.Still had the stock timing chain in it..Pulled the motor apart to find a spun bearing..That was not the reason for the motor packing it in it was the head that cracked and water was mixed into the oil...So I think I spun a bearing way back when and mobil1 kept it going for almost 300 thousand km later with out ever a problem and I drove it like I stole it..And now my 05 Sunfire has Mobil1 in it...And it has 114 thousand on it already and seems well...So as far as I am concerned Mobil1 is the best oil out there and they were one of the first synthetic companys out there But thats just my 2 cents..
i dunno, i've never tried synthetic oil. i've always used valvoline in all my cars(best oil out there imho) theres just something about the sound of synthetic oil that chases me away, so i just keep using what i've always used, good old valvoline

Mobil 1 + Lucas Synthetic for over 100000km, engine still running strong.

Sorry to necro but this is the best "synthetic" thread.
I might add I have a funny synthetic story.
Someone had a Y2K Silverado 4.3 Vortec. Had to fix the fuel pump and lots other bowtie bits that break. But the last oil change before he traded it in he changed over to synthetic. It worked so well that it cleaned out the engine of sludge and plugged the oil filter, which proceeded to blow off the engine while he was driving. Fortunately, Chevrolet Trucks have an Oil PSI gauge that can be seen clearly dropping, and he was able to shut off the engine before it did damage.

SO EVERYTHING!
Ive always ran Mobil 1 synthetic. Regardless I know Mobil 1 is guaranteed to be fully synthetic.
I've used mobil one for a long time now. In my pt cruiser and in my cavalier. However when we got royal purple at work i switched over to that. But never really had a chance to play with the stuff because that motor is long gone now.
