Ecotec swap
Monday, October 02, 2006 6:32 PM
Hey everyone,

My 2002 Cav with the 2.2 eco blew up and I am replacing it. I have found a couple of 2.4 ecos for sale, does anyone know if they will swap out without any modifications. If anyone knows please tell me. Thanks a lot!

no there's some work that needs done, let alone alot of money involved. i believe the only thing that is the same are the engine mounts.

Actually, the 2.4 Eco would require alot of work to drop in since it never came in a j-body. If you are looking at a regular dohc 2.4, get a 2000-2002 version with wiring, pcm and tranny and you are set. If you are looking at a 2.2 ecotec, get one that came from a j-body with the wiring, ocm and tranny and you are good.

woops, just noticed that you had an eco in yours, you will just need the motor if you are putting another eco in there.

Yeah it blew up so I will be getting a different one but I figured if it would swap out without much work figured it would be nice to have an extra 30+ HP. Thanks for your help everyone.

how did it blow up, did you throw a rod or something, or did the timing chain break. Actually to speak of, 4 bangers are primarily light duty engines anyway are they not .

I rode around with only 2nd gear for about 10000 miles and it just blew. I am very impressed it lasted that long to be honest with you.

10000 miles?!? Why didn't you get the transmission fixed before you destroyed the motor?? Sheesh.... Please tell me you at least changed the oil during that period?

My boss drove his '90 Nissan Sentra with only 4 gears for a few thousand miles with it being low on oil. (5-speed)

Engine seized.

It lasted a long time though, considering.

The 2.4L ecotec (LE5) has the exact same external dimensions/mounts as the 2.2L L61. Its a direct drop in. I would recommend sticking with a 2.2L or the sand cast 2.0L LSJ cylinder head though. all 2.4L's have dual variable valve timing. while its simple enough to leave the actuator solenoids disconnected , using an L61 or LSJ head allows you to run any of the available cam timing sprockets and also eliminates any worries of the cam actuatuors failing or otherwise self destructing and causing more issues. I would also recommend using the 2.4's injectors or even some of the aftermarket injectors of a larger than stock size to give the ECM an easier time of controlling fuel quantity without maxing out your fuel trims.
