I just bought a 96 Z24 5 speed with a bum engine. What I wanna know is can I put a 99 Engine wiring and PCM in the car without having to rewire the interior? Basically just plugging in the engine harness to the main connector in the engine bay? PLEASE help me, I would like to do this asap seeing as I have the new engine.
Many people have done this you just have to use your wiring. keep all you stuff for the EGR and the knock sensor is different. Jake did a swap from a 96 to a 01 engine.

Well i wanted to get rid of the egr, use the 2 wire knock sensor and heated o2, thats why i was asking if i could use my 99 wiring and pcm with the 96 interior harness.
Why get rid of the EGR? It doesn't rob any power at WOT.

I am putting on an HO manifold and I hate having an engine light on. Plus I want HP tuners and that runs from 97 and up.
you may have to get a 99 PCM if you want to get rid of it but as said it is not like it is going to rob you of power.+

PLEASE READ MY POST!! lol
I have the 99 pcm, wiring and engine.
Yes you can put the 99 engine bay wiring and ECU in your 96 car. Just plug the engine harness in at the distribution plug by the fire wall.

^^^ John would have a better idea than i do. He swapped my 99 for a 2001 engine. He has done a number of swap from 2.2 to Eco and in the process of doing another.

Thank you very much. Will i need a 99 cluster or will the 96 still work?
I don't honestly know... never worked on a 96 in much depth.
I'd get your hands on a GM service manual (the Haynes and Chiltons are crap for this kind of stuff). Compare the pins on the C100 connector (the big one between the engine bay and interior).
I'd suspect you could just swap it no problem.... with the engine wiring and complete drivetrain.... but I'm not 100% positive. If you cross the 99 to 2000 barrier, then you run into issues. But pre-2000 shouldn't be bad if you swap the whole works.

He swapped a 2000 Engine into his 96. It is the same engine as the 99. E-mail him he will be able to help you out.

Thanx guys. I actually got the car home, assembled what was missing on the car and tried firing the engine up. And to my surprise it is running great. It has a lot of miles on it so when something goed on it, then i will put the new engine and harness in, untill then, i will just drive it with the old high mileage engine!
