I rolled my 04 Pontiac Sunfire today and as the motor and trany only have 70000 miles on them I'm looking at the possibility of putting it in a older Jbody any ideas or tips from someone who has good knowledge on the subject would be aprreciated. I'm not sure of any electrical difrences or anything I need to change with putting a Ecotec motor in a non ecotec older car.
Thanks
Adam
What you need to do is sell the car to me so the motor can have a loving home.
If you want to you can swap anyhting into anyhting but it is all a matter of time effort and money. But i really do want the car if it's a 5spd w/ a good trans and motor.
Well if yiou go with a 2000 and up its pretty much a bolt in affair..if you go with a 95-99 like me the engien mounts line up but the tranny ones have to be redone ..not overly hard tho..the big issue is wirering and all tha..basically strip the new car of everything and pu tit on the old one..gas tank.knuckles, wires ect..phil
It appears that an engine swap would be too time consuming for me so I'm going to have to part the car out, contact me if you would like anything, I'm sure any reasonable offer will not be turned down. It's a auto trany and I also have a autotrans interceptor hooked in right now as well.

If you got a 2000+ car this would be a weekend deal, quick. On a pre 2000 car the tranny mount, gas tank, all wiring has to be swapped. Still not that bad, youhave everything needed for it.

Why do the gas tanks have to be swapped out!? It surely isn't because the fuel pump lacks the static pressure.

The tanks are different. Pre 2000 J's have a metal tank with a faom like piece inside of it. A 2000 + car has a pklastic tank with no foam like stuff in it. Also GM move some of the emission's stuff to the rear of the car adding a extra line (fuel like line). You can do it without swapping the tanks and lines. This means cutting and hacking. For a cleaner install swapping everything is easier, and less chance for CEL's for dumb stuff.

99 to 2000 is slightly easier since the EVAP canister is already back there.... but if you have a 5 speed 95-99 (Isuzu trans) it's more of a pain regardless, since you have to cut and weld the mounts for the Getrag (00-05) 5 speed trans.
Basically... take everything out of your car, and put it into another car's shell. This basic principle works for just about any car, any motor..... you can stuff a B22A motor in a Cavalier or Sunfire.... but to make it run properly you'll have to swap everything else as well.... so effectively, it's just a Honda in a Cavalier shell. Same thing for the 3.8SC motor... now you have a Grand Prix in a Cavalier shell.

Also another plus to swapping tanks is the connection for the fuel filter. 95-99 has a crappy design which can be broke easy. The 2000+ is much easier to change, and less likely to get broken.
