new 2.4L engine
Tuesday, March 14, 2006 11:57 AM
Hey everyone I'm new here and i just wondered if anyone could help me find the best place to buy a new ( not rebuilt, used, reconditioned, or any of that junk) 2.4L motor for a 97 Cavalier Z24. I've already been through 2 used, and 1 rebuilt motor and those seem to fall apart after about 3 blocks down the road so I'm going all out this time. Thanks for the help.

P.S. > I have also been looking everywhere for a racing ECM or at least a top speed limiter remover. Let me know you you have any info on that too, k thanks.

You're 17 years old and you've been through 3 engines with your Cavalier?

Sounds like you need to learn how to change your oil or something.

There's nothing wrong with engines pulled from wrecked vehicles as long as you inspect them and know what you're looking at.

There's also absolutely nothing at all wrong with a rebuilt engine. Fully rebuilt engines are brought back to factory specs by replacing worn parts with new parts, fully remachined block, and all new gaskets and seals.

Crate motor for a 97? Good luck. Maybe GM, but it'll cost you $3500 or so. IF they have any left, that's an old motor now. 96-98 are the same, 99-02 are the same.

You might find a crate on Ebay... but not lots. These weren't exactly popular motors..... sure, used in lots of things (Cavalier, Sunfire, Grand Am, Malibu, Alero, Intrigue?) but there aren't tons sitting new somewhere...

BTW... we don't talk about removing the top speed limiter here. Maybe if you kept it to the speed limit you wouldn't go through so many engines

As already stated nothing wrong with used motors. PacePerformance has GM crate motors for about $2000.00. I have put used motors in J's that are running stronger than they did with the stock motor. I have also rebuilt a 2.4 that has went another 70k before having any type of issues. What exactly is going bad on these engines? If you are really going down the block and they are going bad, sounds like a bad motor to start. They should have a warranty take the motor back. Get a 2000+ motor out of a grand am, alero or soemthing with like 40k on it for about $650. All you need to do is tap the knock sensor hole and put the motor in. You should be set. Also there is not race ECM/PCM/ECU, or computer for our cars. You can get aftermarket standalone engine mangement. Do more research and you will see that.

where can you find these? I've been looking for almost a year now and can't find one, other than the venom 400, which from what i hear does little more than sit there and look pretty. And this isn't a full-street car we're talking about so getting rid of that pesky top speed limiter is a problem when you're pulling 13.2's, at the track mind you, and you can't get it over 105 MPH. But as for the engine I've ripped it appart and you may be happy to know that it was just a cracked rod bearing and I got it off the road quick enough that it did no real damage so 50 bucks and 2 days later it should be good to race again. score

Truly if you did research on this forum you could easy find info about standalones. Your registry is not complete so what do you have done to pull 13.2's??

the things that I personally have done include:
magnaflow cat-back exhaust
high flow converter
4-2-1 header
high flow fuel rails
inline fuel pump
oversized throttlebody
injen cold air intake
lightweight pulleys
stage 3 clutch kit
75 shot wet, cold fusion N2O
b.s. comuter thing i got ripped off on eBay

as for the internals I know that my dad has changed the cams, rods, pistons, and other random parts to get where we are now. I'm not that good with the inner workings of the engine, I just drive the thing. lol. sorry i can't be of more help, maybe I can get him on here when I finish out the registration.

if you woulda serached you wouldve seen that your best option is a 95 z or gt pcm, they can do what you want to do

You can't plug a 95 PCM into a 97 car without rewiring the whole engine bay.... where the hell did you come up with that?

I'm gonna call on this one.... you're magically running low 13's on some bolt ons, and no idea what's been done to the engine?

If you are running nitrous... without any ignition retard... that's why you're blowing engines, pure and simple. If your dad is crazy enough to build you a motor, and let you keep blowing them up, perhaps he can tell you how to drive it properly.

I think you're trolling for how to street race over 108mph, thus the "PS" limiter question. Nice try, but we're not that stupid.
