well my sister just turned 17 and shes got a 2001 sunfire. well this morning she got into an accident with someone else. shes fine but the whole passenger side of the car is @!#$ up but still driveable. the kid that hit her has state farm insurance and there pretty good with totalling cars.
so i told my mom that if they total it see how much they can buy it back for and ill take it... its a automatic 2200 so not a power eater but it does come with a sunroof. so do you all think i should get it. i mean it is still driveable?

its all what you want to do with the car...if you want a show car...sounds sweet or just a car that will get good MPG and look nice...if you like performance...dont do it
also..if the car was hit that bad...make sure it gets checked...a car in a major accident is never the same...

damn double posted my bad haha
well i plan on doing some work more twards performance area.
heres my plan... for both of my j's if i get it
2001 Sunfire--
of course damaged fixed.
convert to a cavfire cause i hate the sunfire front.
paint
then a diy turbo.
1999 Cavalier--
finish interior work.
build engine -of course-
then nitrous it.
one j on induction
one j on spray....
sounds fun....

imo, performance modding a 2200 is pointless.
GO PATS!!!

and thats why its your opinion.
JBO'S Mr. 64.....
well in all fairness you did kinda ask others opinions...but i dont agree...i mean ive seen most push 180-200hp with a turbo..and in fairness thats pretty fast...as for durablity im sorry i dont know...but goodluck with your projects and if i can make a suggestion how bout put all ur money into the new sunfire and use the cavy as a daily driver!?
just and idea...i bet you could make it pimp cause it will be ur direct focus!
The 2200's may be slow, but they will usually last a really long time. I used to rag on mine all the time until i realized that it was stupid to drive like that, and a motor like that isnt meant for racing unless you build it up. But it still runs like new, and it's got 78,000 miles on it.
I'd say check make sure it's still all good to drive first. No point in dropping a ton of money into something that isn't going to steer or act right in general. Not really my business but way not tune what you already have instead.

Yeah, everyone is entitle to their opinion...
My opinion is about the same. Granted if you have a 2200 and don't really want to swap out the motor and just want to work with what you have, I can understand that. But if you're going to spend money on another car just to have the motor for a performance build, I don't see the point when you could invest that in a motor with more aftermarket support and better engineered.
That's just how I see things...

first off see what kind of damage in done to the car first. it may look like just some exterior damage but get under the car and see if everything is ok
^yes i understand that but i dont see the reason for spending 1000 or more dollars on a motor swap and then still only be pushing 140-150 hp when i can put that 1000 in a 2200 and push a 210-220 hp.
and yeah to tell the truth ive thought about it. eco swap cause squirrel just got done with his and he used the wiring from a 2000+ so yeah i know that thats a possibilty with this car...
JBO'S Mr. 64.....
is it even possible to get 200horse from a 2200 with $1000?
1989 Pontiac Sunbird GT - LT3
maybe close... but for 1500 yeah deffinetly...

I'm sorry but unless you have the greatest hookups in the world, there is no way you're spending $1500 and moving a car from 115 HP to 200 HP (Crank). Actually, Wheel Horsepower is the only power that matters, with that said, the motor you want to boost is an Automatic (I'll assume a 4 speed)...so that car is producing around 90-95 whp more than likely.
Maybe I'm missing something but I'd sure like to hear this miracle way of gaining that much power on a 2200 motor for $1500.

Mr.64 (Shaune Drake) wrote:maybe close... but for 1500 yeah deffinetly...
you need to do some research, 1500 bucks wont get you 200hp in a 2200 or else i would of done that a long time ago. even w/ a decent turbo set up you may be at 170 tops and thats pushing like 7-8 psi.
you can swap motors alot cheaper. swap a z motor in there and then dump money into that motor and it will be alot quicker. also there are benifits from swapping motors. im considering doing the eco swap mainly because those motors are strong and can stand a good build unlike a 2200 which is gonna have more problems
whoa your right njhk it never came to my mind that it is a automatic.....
i just find it hard to find the parts for a motor swap thats all. id love to hav ethe eco in it, but there so hard to find around here. and i know little too nothing about motor swappage....

It's easier than you think. Think about it...every Cavalier and Sunfire from 2003+ has an ECOTEC...2 doors and 4 doors. There has to be an old lady who crashed her 03 4 door cavalier but the motor still works.
Go to
www.car-parts.com and search for ECOTEC motors and if you find a place with them, call them up and see if they have the whole car or atleast the engine bay still intact.

but ill also want to find a manual tranny if im going to be doing the swap and those are kinda hard to come by..
JBO'S Mr. 64.....
no their not, just find a whole car, thats what im doing. look for a salvaged car that got ruined like crushed in the rear then you have a good front end and you'll have all the parts you need
hey man if I was you better make sure you can buy it back because some times insurance wount let you buy it back because I tryed to buy my 94 ford taurus sho back and they told me that I cant because its totaled
Opening Soon Kustom J's
yeah i guess i better hold off to see if i get the thing instead of going on ahead and planning crap....

Good Idea. Good Luck on your decision.
