about to buy a 02 cav w/eco, got questions
Thursday, January 26, 2006 5:08 PM
I got rear ended pretty bad and i ended up hitting the guy in the front. The car is messed and will be written off by insurance. I am pretty devastated since i got my car looking pretty good.

anyways. there is this 02 LS sport w/ an eco, 35K, 5spd. I want to get it but i read that the 02 ecos were the weakest. Is it really that junk/ true? and what do they mean by weakest-(im thinking for boosting purposes) i really want it because of the how the front is the same with my 01 and its an eco(better future). also my 01 was pretty preppy. will the 02 eco be kinda quick as my Z with the same mods, header, full exhaust, intake?

If the 02 ecos arent worth it, ill just get the 04 cavs. (dont like the front tho but if it is the fastest..oh well)..

daymm..i am soo devastated.

the eco's run fender to fender with a 2.4

stock for stock, auto for auto.

they're pretty even.

GO PATS!!!

all i know, is that the 02 eco's need the fuel injector system off of a 03+ if u want 2 boost w/ the hahn racecraft kits.

that is the only difference between the 2 that i know of.

i have an 02 w/ the eco! and plan 2 booost it! so i'd say do that, and ur in the right boat! and by the way, i like ur car, and am stealing your idea of the black lip. it'll go good w/ my middle section cutt out!

this makes me feel better. thank you

anways..feel free to take the black lip idea. i dont plan on boosting the cav so there is nothing for me to worry about changing. intake full exhaust and i am happy. also..no more cracked dash for me!!!, which plagued my 01z.

I have an 02 eco 5 speed and I have gone fender to fender with a bunch of cars, last was a 350Z...they must have sucked at driving. Spanked a 5.0 mustang, and newer 6 cylinder ones, I have taken lots of v8 crappers. My guess is that if you know how to launch and shift you will beat most people.
Now I will be quiet for fear of sounding like that tool that used to pollute vs forum.
I have had great luck so far with my car in all of its 66,000 miles and it feels pretty quick to me....well...not compared to any of my other cars(see sig...you will understnad why), but compared to most cars out there its not bad.

I'm sure you'll be quite content with the 02 Ecotec. I have talked to Adam (aka NJHK) and he has told me that he and a few friends have done some informal tests on Eco's of all years. He told me that they came to the conclusion that there was a slight power increase (for some unknown reason) for each year newer Eco. Don't get too nervous, this was a small test done with only a few vehicles without proper testing equipment. The Ecotec is a great motor regardless of year! You won't be disappointed with the Eco/Getrag 5spd combo!

Sorry to hear about your old car, bro, I really liked the white/black accent look. It looked awesome. Good luck with your future car and projects, man.

Blown.

You're right - they must have all really, really, really sucked at driving because the 350Z and 5.0 mustangs are a full 1-1.5 seconds faster than your car, stock for stock. 350Zs apparently run low to mid 14s and fox-bodies run mid 14s bone stock (from personal experience owning 2 mustangs as well as my Z). With anything more than a retard behind the wheel, either car would have easily left yours in a race.

The 50-50-90 rule: Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, there's a 90% probability you'll get it wrong.

haha...yeah...for sure...I am a firm believer that 90% of the people on the road(98% here in phoenix) are legally retarted and should not drive, let alone race. Its scary the accidents that I have avoided here. Everyday just about I avoid an accident...most are old people turning right on red in front of me...end rant

The 02 in my opinion is way better looking than the newer cavs. Its prefered over the newer ones even if it doesnt make as much power. If you are capable of installing a turbo and tuning that, you shouldnt be worried about the differences between the engines.

Any pics of the accident? I would be interested in seeing them if you can get them...Im endlessly intrugued by car accidents...must be something to do with being an engineer and seeing the effects of forces in real life.

Yes, me and Filip had this conversation.

One day a LONG time ago I found a page that listed EVERY LITTLE DIFFERENCE between the years of the ECOTECs (I believe at the time it only went up to 04) and now when I need to make a point I can't find it. But there are slight changes that some weird way make each year different. So in theory, every year it got slightly faster...heck look at the 06 Base Model Cobalts, they are 2.2L but rated at 145 HP, not 140...that should just give you a clue.

But the major difference is the fuel rail, you could easily do a swap if you needed to. I mean, the only thing you would run into problems with it is if you wanted to go boosted. Also, I think the intake manifolds or throttle bodies (or something) make them sit higher and closer to the hood than the 03+ ECOs. You can ask QBE, he had a intake on his that went from the TB to the filter and his rubbed his hood. If you order a weapon-r intake, they come with part of the tube and filter, they don't go to the TB because of that clearance issue.

Other than that, you should be fine. Good luck.

i got the car. i got a good amount of money from the insurance so im not so sad to part with my white Z. anyways i got a new cav 02 eco 5spd blue and im pretty happy with it. I ordered alot of parts already so i cant wait to put them on and see how the ECO does with the bolt ons, if it responds better or the same as my Z.

we also are trading in for an 02 ECO 5spd w/78k miles, and whoever had it put on a canister, and a short shifter...no idea what type of shifter yet, but it does feel a lil more notchy, and 3rd gear was accidently thoguht of as first twice already, so is that normal?with those kinds of miles...what can i expect to look at replacing?

i know they have no resale value, and neither does volvowich is why were gettin a cav, plus i wanted an ECO for awhile to boost it next year, after the alero is done

thanks for any and all help, and sorry for the thread highjack

turkey

02 Olds alero slammed and kitted n so much more

the 2.2 eco cobalts have electric power steering. I'm pretty sure thats where the 5 ponies comes from.

but adam is right, there are variations from every year of ecotec some are very small, others are fairly obvious.

The 2002 ecotec will have the open loop programming in the ecu which means when you punch the gas, the car will go rich and make a bit more power than an 04+ ecotec. some 03s have this programming too, but its still a debate I'm personally investigating (I have an 03 computer... i'll post details later)

also the 02 has the older style fuel rail as was previously mentioned. The 03+ fuel rail and injector set up is a direct bolt in, and can be found in almost all salvage yards.

If you do plan on going boost, your biggest advantage is the ecu programming tho.

Since you have open loop, you can use an FMU and AFPR as a functioning way to add more fuel. On 04+ that solution doesn't work because the ecu will adapt out the extra fuel that added pressure puts in with less pulsewidth.

and as far as the eco vs 2.4 debate... they both run side by side mod for mod, stock for stock. Its a driver's race as far as I'm concerned.

But the ecotec is newer, so it has cutting edge engineering on its side, and the all aluminum structure makes it a bit ligher than the 2.4 so I think the 10hp less or whatever it is is offset by the reduction in weight, and made up for in strength.
