OK I am looking at possibly buying a 5-speed '95 Z24 with a dead engine. I figured an LD9 would drop right into this car and bolt up to the tranny, but I have been told otherwise. Is that true? I thought that the only difference between the LD9 and 2.3L was the displacement. I mean I figured I would need the computer from the LD9, but was hoping everything else would be interchangeable.
Engine swap gurus help me!

ok..i come across thie question every so often...first of all an ld9 will "bolt up" but the computer wont work...second..ITS A 95 Z24!! forget the ld9 and drop a HighOutput quad 4 in there !! itll bolt right up to the tranny, to the mounts, and even your ecu will work without any modification!! if you can get the car cheap consider yourself lucky...buy it..sale the parts off the junk engine that others need( like the throttle body and intake cam) and find yourself a good HO quad and never look back. im sure everyone will agree with me

I agree with scott except for 1 thing, the ecm. The ecm will work with the 2.4 engine.
You need a 96-98 2.4 to work properly. since it's OBDI, you don't need to use the cam sensor and EGR. Everything else should be pretty close to the same thing. Use the 95 sensor on the 2.4 engine and it will work.

Just wondering, I have the '95 Z24 2.3 auto. Is it easy to swap to the H.O. or the 2.4 and make it a manual? Also, is this OBD1 or 2 that I have? I thought I read somewhere that the '95's were OBD 2?

Yeah but how much does a Quad 4 cost, and where do I find one? I'm looking to make this pretty much a beater car, and only put about a grand into it. (including car and replacement engine for it)

Hmm well I can't seem to find any in my area other than two which each have like 90,000+ miles on them.
I don't really care about this car going fast anyway since I have my Goat for that
. I'm just looking for something to cruise to and from my g/f's college since I don't want to rack up miles on my GTO and my truck gets crappy gas mileage when I go 70+ mph.
Plus I have a soft spot in my heart for the LD9... it was the engine in my first car.

plus you dont want a quad4 or ld9, they stopped making them for a reason. they ended up being crap for reliability.
ld9 is ur best choice if ur buying a used engine, in terms of chance for lower milage already on it.
unless ur building it up, ld9 is prbly best

WTF? They stopped making them because a better engine was developed. There are plenty of reliable Quads and TC's out there.. and many of us that build them up without reliability issues either. As long as you take care of it, it will take care of you.
By your argument, the Celica was ended for a reason too... crap for reliability? I don't think so.

a very uninformed comment....not to mention a quad is what came with his car and will be easiest to put back in......
but if your set on a ld9 i wish you the best of luck and hope it works out for you
but just for research sake i found a w41 quad (thats 190 hp stock) for 600 something with only 70k on it...but im sure i can find you a LO quad for much less..and thats what came stock in your car

hey scott that w41 you found, would you be ablw to find out how much for the intake mani tb and cams would be ????
they said they wernt willing to break apart a working shelf engine for parts..only bone yard engins will they do that with ..losers haha.....but i can get you new w41 cams for 350 and you should be able to get a intake mani and TB for pretty cheap..there all over ebay adn the w41s are the same as the HOs
