I want to put it in the FAQ... so can I have the definitive answer on which cars are OBD I and which are OBD II??
95 automatics?
95 2.3L automatics?
95 2.2L 5 speeds?
96 2.2L 3 speed automatics?
which ones?!?
thanks,

Untrue
95 are all OBD-1. Some 96 5 speeds are OBD-1 and some are OBD-2, for example, Jake has an OBD-1 96 5-Speed, Ahittz24 has an OBD-2 96 5-Speed. As far as I can tell, the 96 2.4 auto's are all OBD-2, as well as 96 2.2's.

Well what the shat I thought all 96+ GM's were obd2. Must be the early 96's that aren't. (My 96 2.2 3spd is obd2)
WRONG BOTH OF YOU
95 manuals were OBDI
95 Autos were OBDII
It will read like this
95 automatics? OBDII
95 2.3L automatics? OBDII
95 2.2L 5 speeds? OBDI
96 2.2L 3 speed automatics? OBDII
^^^nevermind...so some 96 manuals are and some aren't?
yes...according to todd miller, and my own experiences...96+ ANYTHING is OBD II, 95 2.3L manual cars were still OBD I, while all 2.2L, and 2.3L autos were OBD II...as far as production numbers..including all chassis (N and J), there are like 3500 2.3L 5 speed cars...so OBD I, 5 speed quad cars are a touch on the hard to find side
I guarentee you that not all 96's are OBD-2... hell I've spent the last 6 months studying them for this software, so I'd bet my paycheck on that one. Not to mention Jake, who lives not 2 hours from me, is cruising around in an OBD-1 2.4L 5 speed.

Is there an easy way to tell if its OBDI? besides hookng up a code scanner for OBDII and it not working. Is there a certain number in the VIN you need to look for?
95 2.2 (5 spd and auto) are OBDI DTP. Otherwise, Mantapart is selling a chip for an OBDII car

my 95 2.2 5 speed is obd-1 but has the 16 pin connector and required a special cord for the scannor we had at work as the obd-2 cord would plug in but not read.
yes that is a long run of sentence.
just look at the diag port
Ok so how do you tell for sure? GM has even said in the past 96-and up are ODBII. I have spoke with a sioftare tunner for GM prototypes and he stated that as well. There has to be a way to tell, be it the vin number etc..

My 95 2.3L MTX has to plugs on the ECM, it's OBDI. the auto 2.3L and 2.2L were supposed to be obdII for that year, BUT, I got a reman computer and it had a 2.2L ATX chip in it. My 2.3L ran fine, but had a CEL. I did the HO swap and replaced the chip with the proper one for my motor and all issues went away. for 95 all motors used the same computer, but had different chips.
on the 2.3 you can just look for the cam position sensor
or a 2nd 02 sensor
Jake's car is OBD-II
ALL 96+ are OBD-II
95 5 speed 2.3's are OBD-1
95 auto 2.3's are OBD-2

95 2.3 Manual is OBD1 --- Federal 49 state emissions level cars
All 95 2.3 Autos are OBD2
There were supposed to be 95 2.3 Manuals that are OBD2 that were for California emissions.... but I have never seen one nor do I know af any that exist.
All 95 2.2 are
OBD1.
All 96-up, all engines are OBD2. (Federal law is that all cars, 96-up must be OBD2).
And subnote: All 95s OBD1 and OBD2 have OBD2 diagnostic connectors.

Ok guys, from what I am reading here my 1995 Cavalier with the auto trans. is an OBD I, correct?
and I have a computer for a 96 5-spd sitting here that I was planning on using for my 5-spd swap that has three plugs on it (black, grey and blue) and from what's been said that makes it an OBD I as well? so I CAN use it? I haven't paid for it yet but I don't wanna fork out the $70 if it's not gonna work. Thanks.

Correct.

Incorrect. 3 plugs = OBD2

Anyting is possible. But it wouldn't even be close to worth it. You would need to get or modify ALL the cars harnesses and add the extra sensor.... cam postion, tank pressure, etc. to make it work properly.
All 95 OBD1 PCMS (2.2a, 2.2m, 2.3m) use the same PCM, the only thing that changes is the chip. Last I checked, a while ago though, chips were only about $35 from the dealer - new.

I guess the easiest thing to do is to go and look at my computer and see how many plugs are on it. If it's three I'm good if it's only two I'm screwed.
