91 CAV. FRONT END VIBRATION-NOISE? HELP!
Monday, September 12, 2005 8:52 PM
I have a 91 cav 2.2 auto w/ 108K -just bought it and have a vibration/noise when going down road and slightly turning to right. It also happens in dips when suspension is in "compression" at bottom of dip. nothing on left turns or going straight on road.
any ideas? bearing? axle? which side? it almost sounds like its in middle of engine compartment.
Thanks

Wore out tire is the most likely cause. Maybe tire pressure. Tire out of ballance...

Could also be bushings in the control arm, tranny mount, or engine mount.

Sounds like the left front wheel bearing to me. For some reason on 2nd gens, they only whine at certain spots during suspension travel, especially when the suspension has alot of miles on it.

James,
I think you are right, cv boots nice and clean & intact, will try the dreaded bearing change...By the way is a 91 first or second gen body?

never mind on the 1 or 2 gen question, I just had to read the web closer to answer my question, thanks anyhow...will let you know how the bearing "fix" works.
By the way to remove brg & hub book says use puller, cant you just loosen axle nut to end of shaft, wack(gently on end to move it in somewhat and get behind hub w/ a punch Or drift and drive it off from the back w/out using a puller ?(of course the rotor etc would be off too)that would save removing suspension parts?
Thanks

There are three Torx head bolts that hold the bearing on. You will see them when you remove the rotor. Slide a drift punch into the rotor through the caliper and loosen the axle nut, then remove the caliper and rotor. Then you can do just what you said and tap the end of the axle to break it free. Then remove the three Torx bolts and the bearing will come off.
