post your suspension setups, looking for options

ok, what I am looking for are
1) what components are you running
2) what led you to buy those components
3) what your opinions of those components are
a) how does it ride
b) how does it handle
c) would you recommend it to a friend

I recently got a sunfire, doing a complete teardown/buildup on it, and going to do it right the first time, been a while and I know there are a lot of new parts out there, I just want actual user input on them, not what the company PR rep is paid to say about them. I don't really want a car built for straight line, more for auto X or even actual road courses, but there will be some grunt behind the wheels too. Looking forward to your replies, and before you tell me to use the search button, there are just too many different setups to search for, it would take too long.

It's because the do-hickey wasn't installed on the right what-cha-ma-call-it, and now the round thing is borked. The oblong thing is probably FUBAR now and will need to be replaced with a square widget.

while I love the look of a bagged cavy or fire, its not something that I wish to have on my car, as I like to drive, and drive HARD, it would really be bad if I were to be out somewhere and blow a bag or a line. Had some experience with bagged S-dimes and just don't want to go through that myself.

its sad, but its your money...

but you basically paid decent money to get a decent setup, then simply rode on it slammed which rides like crap, no matter what you get.... if it doesnt have travel, you are basically screwing up your car.

if you wanna be low, buy air ride...

springs... maybe sport lines, or something i wouldnt recommend, buy a cheap ebay set that will sag past 2 inches... and pray you didnt damage the yellows.... you;ll know when you take em off

I have Eibach Sportline Springs with KYB AGX Struts/Shocks
Would I recommend it, no...if you want Sportline Springs, I would recommend Koni Yellows.
It rides alright, no bounce but you feel the road alot more. With better absorbing setup you will be even better.
It handles fine.

Here is a picture of what it looks like:

Aaron, I'm not telling you, but Marc I will hit you up on your hotmail.....

no just kidding.

Tokico D-Specs
Sportlines
Eibach Sway bars
17" wheels and tires.

Coming soon front subframe and rear tie-bar.

A little bit or in the seat research riding in differnt cavalier wth different set-ups is what got me to where I wanted this, about a year of riding with everyone.

Would I suggest it, Seeing as I have a low mileage car, and I have only put about 16,000 miles on this set-up I think it is to early to say...I love the ride, handling and adjustability. (But Aaron knows the ride) Is in my opinion much better than the Yeloows and Sportlines, but they also ride much lower than my car, don't know whay Karo's had the same ride height at the bash as well.

As far as suggesting it, I know of two J-BOMers who have the struts on the way, or at their house ready for install after rides in my car.

on previous 3rd gens i had...:

'96 Z24 w/ Koni Specials, Intrax springs, GM front strut brace,7/8" Hellwig rear sway bar (old school) and Control FX rear tie bar.
this setup was great. had i kept the car, i would've kept these same pieces on it as long as possible. only annoyance was having to remove the Specials to adjust them.
very firm, just about zero body roll (which is actually bad in some cases), and generally fun. it didn't even make the cd player skip! this car always had heavy, stock wheels with the stock RS-A (squealer) tires.
turning had a slight feel of understeer.

'01 Z24 w/ Koni Sports, Eibach Sportlines, GM front strut brace, 1" Addco rear sway bar, 14.5lb 17x7 Velox wheels w/ Yoko ES100 tires.
differences in damper valving and spring rate, when compared to the older car, made this ride not quite as pleasant. more noticeable body roll, and i got to feel all medium to nasty changes in the road surfaces. very good turn-in, and the car never felt out of control.
neutral handling; no noted over- or understeer.

given the choice of the two, i'd pick the setup that was on the '96 any day. shame the Specials aren't readily available anymore.

neither of my current cars really applies to your third gen, so i'll spare you the details...

on my first cavy Prokits on Stock struts was ok for a about 2 months then i could not stand the ride. Current car got Intrax fine for about 2 months ride sucked could not stand driving it drove it when i had to. Then i got Ground Control and Koni's great ride much better than what i had before. So current set up

-Ground Controls
-Koni's
-ADDCO rear sway bar with poly bushings
-Front Strut tower brace
-Poly Bushing on the stock Z24 from sway bar

It is nice handling, I some times on purpose try to spin out the back and it is hard to.
It took a little tweaking to get if where i wanted it. Koni setting and ride height. I need to try and get a rear brace for the car now. One i get that and a rear brake conversion kit i will be good on suspension.

1) Koni Reds, RK Coil Overs (Dropped ~1.75 inch), Factory Front Sway Bar, Eibach Rear Sway Bar, GM Front Strut Bar, Custom Rear Strut Bar, Wider Wheels and Tires
2) Research and reading the org
3) Very good. Big difference over stock. Take it easy over the bumps.
a) Pleasant , but again, take it easy over the bumps
b) 100x Better than Stock
c) Yes
Overall if you asked me hows the suspension? I would have to say SOLID!

1) what components are you running

-Ground Controls
-Koni's
-ADDCO rear sway bar with poly bushings
-Front Strut tower brace
-Poly Bushing on the stock Z24 from sway bar

2) what led you to buy those components
Reading, talking to people, asking question and going through two other suspensions that i wasted money on. would have an extra $500 if i did not buy Pro kit of Intrax.

3) what your opinions of those components are

Awesome. Try to get the back to spin out but can get it done easily

a) how does it ride

For me it ride firm not bouncey

b) how does it handle

Handles great.

c) would you recommend it to a friend

I would but adjust to you comfort level.

Koni's don't really do anything to prevent body roll. That's the realm of the springs and the sway bars.

Stiffer springs and bigger sway bars reduce roll. Dampers are there to keep the springs under control so they'll prevent roll in side-to-side manoeveures like a slalom but not much in a steady turn such as a skid pad.

Same setup minus the strut tower bars. I have the GM one on front, nothing rear. Big difference in handling. will be adding a rear sway bar and strut bar soon.

03 fire. Yeah's it's an ECO.

thanks a bunch for all the support and answers. the suspension is still a ways off, but I did want opinions so that when the time came, I would know exactly what i wanted. I will take all this info into account, do some hard research time, get specs on the parts and match them against what I feel I want the car to be able to do. Event, I have seen some of your past posts regarding suspension and the like, and I will probably be coming to you for some specific questions down the road. Again, thanks to all, if we could just keep all the posts on here this civilized, and not let flaming take over, the .org would be a much better place.

I have KYB GR2 struts and DropZone springs all the way around, on 16" 2001 Cavalier Z24 wheels. I'm not a big fan of the springs and will be switching to a progressive rate spring before too long. But it rides good, they are good struts for the money.

I was a retard, and now I'm permanently banned.

agx's with rk-coilovers 1.5"drop and addco rear bad with a custom made front STB with 3/16 endplates all welded. car-customs control arm bushings and poly front sway bar d-bushings and endlinks. and a custom alignment.
rides very stiff. no body roll. the car is very fun to drive. http://www.airtonics.com/jbodyautox05/MauricesOpener05run4.WMV
