i wanna lower my car as close to 1.5" as possible. I don't wanna change my shocks. the car is a 04 cavalier Ls with the lips on the bumpers. What are my opitions?
If you lower the car at all, you need new struts. The factory ones as well as factory replacements (monroe, gabriel, gr2s, etc) will NOT handle a drop.

There is no option possible for lowering a J without changing the factory strut. Get some Tokico HP Blue. They are good and not very pricy.

These two statements are incompatible.
as already stated, lowering on factory/ factory replacement struts is a no no. the valving in a J strut cannot handle the drop and will ride like @!#$ and blow out (most likely pretty quickly). anyone who has been here for a while with any kind of knowledge of these cars will say the same thing.
i did it for a year and regretted every second of it. the car handled like garbage and sucked over bumpy/ uneven roads and the struts did blow out. strongly recommend NOT doing it like that.
if you're sticking with a 1.5" drop, go with Eibach's pro-kit springs.
you have options for struts. you can either get KYB AGX adjustables(only good for a MAX 1.5" drop), Tokico D-spec adjustables, Tokico HP/blues (supposed to be the same as D-specs without the adjust-ability), Koni Yellow adjustable inserts, or find a set of used Koni Reds. those are the best options that WILL handle a 1.5" or grater drop. if you don't care about adjust-ability then Tokico blues are the way to go. probably the cheapest option (been a while since ive looked tho).

I do not recommend the agx's with the prokit, that was a crappy ride at any adjustment.
Maybe these will work for you-- "500" rear adjustable two way spring lox they're like $15 at auto zone

Let all the air out your tires, done. Cant be any better than stock struts with lowering springs. Plus its safer this way, you wont be able to go faster than you need to move the car forward/reverse.
On a serious note, it can be done--but its not reccomended. Just save up and do it all the right way. Like I always tell the wife, dont settle just because... think it through and do it right. Good luck to you.
