car sits unlevel, why???
Friday, April 10, 2009 7:07 PM
i just put brand new tenzo R lowering springs on a brand new set of KYB GR-2 struts. now the car sets higher in the front than it does in the rear. I have 19's on it. the front is about inch an a half from the tire and the rear is about a half inch from the tire which is where i want the front to sit. Help Please!!

Maybe you put the rear springs on the front?

Some drop springs it is normal for the rear drop to be more than the front drop. This technique is commonly referred to as "leveling out the car." My recommendation is to look on the Tenzo site and check to see if it is supposed to be the same drop all around or if there is a different drop rate front to rear.

I know someone who has tenzo's and their car doesnt sit unlevel. Your problem is, you bought kyb gr-2's which are essentially stock replacement and not meant for a drop.

I hate when I see this... Suspension is not something you cheap out on! Your whole car rides on it, and you will feel every bump... and when those stock replacement struts you used with lowering springs fail (and they will, it's just a matter of time...), you will feel an even worse quality ride than you already are (if you can imagine that). When you suspension fails, and your car bounces all over like crazy, it starts to get more difficult to control... if you have to make a panic stop or some sort of emergency maneuver... what happens when you lose control and smash up your ride?

Ok, maybe I'm being a little extreme here, but I hope you get the idea. A friend of mine did his car really, really cheap... lowered on already blown stock struts, using Eibach Sportlines that he'd cut 4" lower. That car didn't last two weeks... and he almost killed his girlfriend when the coil spring on one corner spun off the perch, then the wheel came off and the car nose-dived into the pavement.

If you can't afford to do it right - why sacrifice your own safety and do it wrong, when you could save up more and do it right to begin with?

Just curious... is your car a 95-99? Reason I ask is because a friend of mine has the same suspension that I do, and mine sits higher in the front than his. Only difference in the two is his is an 04 and mine is a 99. I've heard that the 00+ use different style strut mounts. I'm guessing that could be the reason.

Unfortunately, there are times in this game when that means having to wait a little longer to save up more money rather than buying crap.

Many of us J owners are on a budget (if we weren't, we most likely wouldn't be driving J's). Just make sure you research what you can cheap out on vs. what you can't.

X2. I bagged my cav when i was only making $400 a week. Budget is also the reason why its on steelies. Budget doesnt mean it has to be done cheap. It means you have to choose your mods wisely and plan them out. Hell, PJ's skwirl build is on a budget.

Yeah the 00+ mounts will be lower in the front than the 95-99.

omg this is the best thing ever, but for real... those safety concerns are LEGIT. . A) if you have 130 to 150 bucks for Tenzo springs...(not baaad springs) why not save another 100 bucks for Eibach springs? (the best you can get on this car really)B) im on a budget... and you know what? i put my kit on before i painted it... ehhh... shoulda waited so i could not have a white kit for as long... you coulda saved for the better set up...
all i know is that anyone that gets eibach prolines...and the right KYB struts...loves them...no complaints...ever... so when i do it... im doing it right.

We've got way off topic... but since we're already there...

With that listed on their website, you MIGHT have a fighting chance at getting a warranty replacement (via the company, not KYB) when those GR-2's fail. But I somehow doubt it...

It's a known fact that the GR-2's are an OEM replacement, and the AGX is for lowered applications, and is adjustable. Any search on this website, or any other car enthusiast forum would tell you that, complete with stories of warranties being denied for using them with lowering springs in excess of 1.5 inches or so... Simply put, the GR-2's WILL fail when used outside of their designed range... they are not valved properly for a lowered application - and when they do fail, if KYB inspects them, they will see clearly where the wear marks are on the strut rod, and deny any warranty coverage.

So... the site that sold them to you made a mistake. Unfortunately, you're the one who is going to s**t out of luck. I don't mean to sound like a jerk here, but I've seen people post this same setup over the years many, many times... and it always ends up with blown struts and a crappy ride. I had it on my car, when I first lowered it (Sportlines with stock struts)... my friends flat out refused to ride in my car, it made them that ill.

I used B+G springs on stock struts for a while. It was pretty bouncy but wasn't unsafe by any means. I have a friend who ran sportlines on stock struts for 3-4 years, the ride quality was great, hardly more bounce than stock, and he didn't have to replace a strut once.

do you have a system in your car?

if you do, that could also be the cause of your uneven drop.

antler... great ride quality? compared to what? my sedan's factory struts were blown on the stock springs after maybe 40k miles. and if the car is bouncing more than stock, it means that he's riding on blown struts. just an fyi...

i have also seen the eco-equipped cars sit higher in the front due to the lower weight of the motor.

"Works with stock or lowering springs. Comes with the KYB limited lifetime warranty."

how can i put this. companies tell or say things customers like to hear. yes it works with the struts, but is it stable or reliable? most people who have commented so far have gone through many different suspension setups. those kybs are gonna blow.. and you most likely wont be able to tell the quality of your suspension until you ride in someones car with say, sportlines and koni yellows. or any other spring with koni yellow shocks. even that is just a generic description as there are other shocks/struts which are actually designed to handle the performance of a lowering spring. As said before, Gr-2s are stock replacement. The length of the gr-2s are the same with the stock shocks. which are to tall for a lowering springs. this will lead to the springs bouncing of the perch itself in some occasions causing damage or accidents.

and as JOHn said the jbodies with the ecotecs do sit higherup front compared to Js with the ld9
