IRS swap help!
Saturday, August 16, 2008 4:57 PM
I'm looking to do my IRs swap over vacation. I already have the complete rearend setup including e brakecable from an 01 alero and the new rubber lines.

All I need to know now is the hardware. Anyone that hasdone this remember what bolts and nuts you used to secure the rearend to the car? I'd like to get everything together in advance, that way once I get started I don't have to stop until I finish.

The only other question I have is does anyone have pictures of the strut towers after they have been slotted? Just trying to get an idea of where will get me close enough to get to the alignment shop.

Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance.

I used some extra suspension bolts & nuts I had laying around... stock GM stuff, 15mm with grade 9.8 rating. Drill the four holes, thread the nuts into the frame rail, do up bolts... pretty simple, really.

Thanks for the help Lenko. Do you by any chance remember about what length the bolts were? And what did you use to fish the huts up into the frame rail? Welding wire or a magnet maybe?

Do you have any pics of the slotted strut towers? I'm going to use the n-body struts and mounts. I guess I'll make up a template of the two and see what I come up with. I assume I'll have to slot outwards since the n-body rear is wider.

Sorry for all the questions. Not looking for someone to hold my hand on this. Just any little tips/tricks to make the install easier. I like to be well prepared before starting a project.

Pretty short. Actually, now that I think about it, we fished the bolts into the frame rail, and put the nuts on from below. We held the crossmember in place, made sure it was straight and square then drilled the four holes... fished through with regular wire, pretty thin stuff, like 18 or 20 gauge (phone wire is good!).

I didn't slot anything on the strut towers. I did have to use the grinder to shave a bit off the trailing arms bushing sleeve, on the N-body stuff, to fit into the J-body bracket because it's a hair wider than the J one is. But I also have a couple of degrees of negative camber, which I quite like for handling purposes... plus, I need the clearance off the fenders.

John, Dom (FF22) and I have been talking about this IRS swap on the DSCTunerhaven forums.
With the discussion we had (your name popped up in the conversation), it's something that I may tryy in the next year or so and will be checking out the local u-pull-it junkyard for some cars with the IRS.
I also know that Dom is going to be doing this himself also and should have it done pretty soon if all goes well.
Could you PM me about this as I've got a couple of questions I'd like to ask.
Thanks man.
