Okay, so basically I need some help to determine whether or not anyone else has had an issue like this.
I have a 2001 sunfure GT 2 door coupe (2.4L LD9 if that makes a difference) and I have noticed some stupidly fast wear on my FL brake pads. It does not pull left or right when braking, nor when my foot is not on the brake whatsoever, however when I check the brakes I notice that the FL brake has quite a bit more (in excess of 5mm on both inside and outside) and the outside pad has an angled wear pattern on it. The right side is fine, just like a normal wear should be.
I do like to take corners somewhat quick (hey, I am young yet, I want some fun
) but its not like anything in excess of 30-40KM/hr. I noticed on my last set of pads before I replaced them it was actually scratching a piece of metal on the disc when I would take a corner, and the only way it would let off is if I would hit the brakes while cornering, which leads me to believe it is the caliper. I think it is not floating with the disc properly, but I don't want to throw money at it buying a caliper, find out its not it, then try a disc, and that not be it or something like that. I am in high school and cannot afford such a feat.
So all I am asking I guess, is if anyone else has had similar problems, and if they did, how did they fix them?
Much appreciated with your input!
#1, your squeeling issue on your last set was the squeelers most likely. it is a piece of metal attached to the backing plate of the pad, to give you an audtiory warning that your pads are low.
Uneven/angled pad wear, I would check the condition of your slide bolts, and the area on the spindle that the pads come in contact with. Check for any type of grooving from a pad cutting into the spindle, that would keep the pad from moving freely.
If your car starts pulling, or you notice wear caused on 1 pad (outer/inner), but not the other, I would be more inclined to think something hydraulic related. It is still a possibility, but I would start by looking at what I stated above.
The pad wear is very intense on both sides of the pad, however the outside pad is angled back right to front left, and has a good 2mm difference between the sides of the pad. This might sound a little strange, but I could not find the slide bolts when I took the brakes apart, and so I did not have a chance to grease them. Unless you are talking about the two bolts you have to undo in order to take the caliper off of the axle?
Those are the slide bolts on our cars...
I had the same problem. My car had 167,000 miles on the calipers so I changed them out and purchased new slide pins and Brembo slotted rotors. My mechanic said the old bolts looked fine and reused them. 4 months later my Brembo's were ruined. I found out after Brembo replaced the rotors that the slide pins were binding. Replaced the pins and all is well. $10 pins ruined $140 rotors. Lesson learned, change your slide pins.
Well I had no idea, I thought they looked rather dry to be the slide bolts, I will go take a look at that ASAP.
thanks as well jpo, I may go do that too
Unless the slide pins are rusted over, bent, or otherwise damaged, you shouldn't need to replace them if you're on a budget. A simple emery cloth scrub (if they need it) and some new lube will work.
Clean out the bore of where the slider pin goes through too.
