im trying to get ideas of how i could possibly build my own set up. but i was hoping somebody could get some pics for me of the their assembly off the car and installed. any input is appreciated
thanks thats exactly what i was looking for, i needed know how the top of the shocks where mounted. also how long is the setup. i'm guna try use some coil overs used for dirt late models-modifieds that either have a 7 or 9 inch long shock and fab up the mounting plates. heres link to one of coil overs

How do you plan on attaching them to the spindle and axle? An eye style shock is not a strut, nor can it be made into one. If you want to build struts, use a modular strut kit from Koni or something, but at that point, it would be much cheaper to buy an off-the-shelf model and use that. I guess I'm not really sure why you want to do this.
i was going to turn this into a school project since i have access to all kinds of equipment. but i was shot down since my instructor doesnt like vehicles in the shop (doesnt want to be liable if it blows up while welding on it or the system fails while on the road) any way i was going to pull off one of the heim ends on the shocks and mount it solidly to a set of mounting tabs to the spindle and leave the heim on top mounted to a built top plate. the rear i was going to leave all heims on then build another top mounting plate and attach the bottom like a stock strut. now whether this would work i dont know but if you guys think it might work then later on i'll jus do it all on my own.
I think you have no idea what your doing and should probably not mess with such a vital part of the car. If it fails (which more then likely its only a matter of time) while driving very very very bad things will fallow.
your right i dont know much about the j body, now if it were a pickup or race car then i would know what to do. the j is a new learning curve for me, ive been racing myself for almost 10yrs now and been around it all my life but none of it has been like the j platform. this is why i was asking for pics so i could get an idea of how things work. thanks for all your guys opinions
eh i dont know about the whole hemi joint on the front struts. it may be possible but your going to be creating a very custom suspension up front with new spindal and all.
There are companies that sell struts without tabs for the purpose of welding them on to create custom struts. They're pretty pricey though, since they are designed to be welded on. Removing a shock eye and adding a tab is taking a step back. The strut needs two solid attachment points at the spindle (either that, or it needs to be part of the spindle, ie- welded directly to it, with no bolts). It can't pivot or the geometry will change everytime you transfer weight left/right.
You have a good idea, but there are already off-the-shelf products that do the same thing.
why? just be logical here... just save your money and do it the right way.. you will be happy you did and have less head aches..might even save a life.
it may not seem logical, but i would rather take on the challenge if i had another j (other than my dd) to try fab up something rather than buy something off the shelf. thanks for all the input, now i understand how the front end works
