I have a 05 cavalier ls sport with about 36000 miles on it. The problem that I am having is that im getting a very faint clunking noise coming up through the steering wheel when i make turns and it does it totally randomly. I put it up on the lift where i work and checked out the whole front suspension and everything is nice and tight. I have a front strut bar so i decided to remove that and try it out but to no avail. The only other thing that I can possibly think of is something in the steering rack itself. Has anyone else had similar problems or give me some advice on what to do. Thanks.
sounds like a strut mount

no, i can just feel it in the steering wheel ever so slightly but i can hear it. Possibly sounds like its coming from the upper strut area

You cna feel the pop in the steering wheel. I know, because both my strut mounts are gone.

So is that a common problem in these cars? I didnt think they would be shot already with a stock suspension.
Mine used to make the popping noises, but then I re-torqued the top strut bolts to spec, and it went away.
My strut mounts have been gradually getting noisier over the last 2-3 years. I heard of a "tip" from somebody at a dealership about putting ATF into the center of the strut mounts and allowing it to run through. It helped mine, but they still make noise - I think they were too far gone by then. It worked perfectly on my brother's car though, and another friend's Sunfire. He couldn't believe the difference. Even his wife noticed how much quieter it was.
Just make sure you're not parked somewhere too nice, as it will drip out below for a day or so. Worth the few cents worth of ATF IMHO.

Thanks, I will try that as soon as the weather gets a little nicer. Its worth a shot anyways.
By the way, Does anyone know the correct torgue spec for the top strut bolts?
yea my grand am makes a clunking sound around left hand turns at highway speed (coming from the front pass. side), gets worse the faster i go. I have yet to get it fixed, but im just going to replace the strut and mounts and bearing plate.
