im just curious if anyone has ever contimplated this as well or even gone through with it.
i know there are alot more rear disc vw around then there are rear disc neons. i was just curious, since they still share the 5x100 bolt pattern as the j-bodies do, could this work?
i know they use a wheel bolt instead of a wheel stud and nut like the j-bodies do. could they be converted over to a wheel stud and nut? or would you be stuck using the wheel bolt?
i dont know if this is something i would consider doing to my car just yet (having a dilema with what i really want to do with the car), but i thought i would throw this out there to see if anyone thinks it possible or has completed it...
let me know.

Cost would be my main problem since a V W has expencive stock parts.
Ever one lives 1 page at a time, some stories are longer than others. R.I.P to one of my many best friends. Keep all the tuners safe. See you soon, Love ya man.
i would think that the availability of a vw rear disc in the salvage yard would be alot better than the neon. and really, there weren't that many rear disc neons, so im sure their discs arent that cheap either.

It would all depend on the shape of the caliper bracket if you decided to machine it to fit the J bearing. If you decided to use the entire VW bearing, hub, etc and modify the J axle to work with it, then you could go that route too. Around here (northeast US), there aren't too many VWs in the yards (at least the ones I've been to), but there are alot of Neons and other Chrysler stuff that will work.
ya see in my area i find that there are alot more vw with the factory rear disc. from what i remember seeing most, if not all (golf, Gti, Jetta, Bug), vw's from 99.5 and newer were rear disc and 5-100 bolt pattern (except for the passat, 5-112 for those i think).
there are probably more of those in the local yards for me than the neons with rear discs.
im going to do some more looking into this, see what i can find. who knows, maybe we can use them for the IRS 5-100 swap too...

lol darkstars like to yell at me though... im jk, the more info the better and expirience to back it up is a plus.
im going to ask around too, know a few vdub freaks.

The V-dubs can be converted to have studs, I had to do it to one to make a certain set of wheels work. Had to get studs with threads on both sides, and used an allen wrench to screw it in, and then the nuts bolted on to those.. pretty simple.

I saw this awhile ago, there no question relating to VW in this thread that would warrant a responce... overall I think its a waste of time so I was just gonna keep quite, he gets all angry when I rain on his parade LOL
but yeah anythign VW specific you need to know let me know, otherwise I'm out
thanks for the offer darkstars. i will let you know.
more than likely i wont even go through with it. but who knows. like i said, im having a dilema on what my car really means to me and need to decide what im going o do with it.
ateast now there might be another option for people who want a rear disc setup.

Hi i am from México i use the opel astra rear disc´s and i swap them in my sunfire, there are 5x100 and only have to re drill, but bye bye park break
, but brake´s awesome.
here a pic
Yup. Here in the US, those can be had on a Saab NG. And they bolt right up. The bolt pattern is the drawback.
^ More info on that setup?

GM Europe (Opel) and Saab are corporate partners in Europe, so alot of the Opels share Saab parts and vice versa. It just so happens that the Astra shares its rear discs with the Saab 900, which is just about identical between the US and euro versions. I don't know where the bearing to axle bolt pattern orignated, but its the same pattern as we have (probably originated with the J platform and then later got used on the Astra platform, which is a spin off from the Euro J platform). Either way, the US J platform bearing to axle bolt pattern is the same as the Saab 900NG, so anything that bolts up to that will bolt up to the J.
The 900 came from the factory with rear discs, the two problems are- each side is about 3/4" thicker than the drum setup Js have, so the axle needs to be narrowed, or the fenders cut and flares added, unless you want to run donut spares. The other problem is the bolt pattern. The Saab is 5x110, and to double it, it uses studs, not lugs. So unless you redrill the bearing to use lugs, and then redrill the rotor to match, you're kind of screwed. (Caveat- Fernando is using actual Astra parts, and I have no clue what the differences, if any, are between those and the Saab stuff, all I know is that the bearing to axle bolt pattern is the same.)
Dan Cotter and I (and some other guys from other boards) seriously looked into this a few years back, but ditched the whole idea, since it required too much work. Thats when I stumbled on the Neon stuff, which was much easier, and much more available used. The only pics I have are some of the stock Saab setup on the car, and some AllData diagrams of the components, none of which give you any dimensions or anything.
I dont think the VW stuff will be worth your time. there would be extensive re-work needed for the e-brake, and depending on which setup you go with, you would either have to shorten the axle, the same as whats shown above.
Darkstars, I didnt know you were a v-dub tech. Whats your address, so I know where to send my sympathy card.
I suppose anything is possible with enough $$, but I think you are going to be better off going with the neon rears.
