ABS light

ok, i've searched and cant find what i'm looking for. my ABS light has been on since i changed my brakes like 8 months ago. no other lights are on. it came on when the old pads were wearing down. my ABS works fine, no problems whatsoever. does anyone know how to turn it off before i just take the damn bulb out. the chevy dealer is a bunch of pricks and tell me i need to bring it in so they can charge me out the ass to do work that don't need done. any help is appreciated.

So they can do work that doesn't need to be done?

Man I freaking love it when people don't know what the problem is, but they won't take it somewhere because they know the people will do work that doesn't need to be done. If you knew what needed to be done, you would have the problem fixed.

That is just like the people that come into my place of work, and tell me how to fix the problem that they are having me look for, even though thier way is not right and I have to explain that to them, they are still always right because mechanics, hired with training and experience, know absolutely nothing about what they are doing.

Check your brake fluid. If that doesn't work, go drive it and see if your ABS even works.

Ok, I skipped over the parts where you said the ABS works. I still say check the brake fluid, if that is good, it could be a bad wheel speed sensor.

I had my abs light on recently. Checked everything out and had the code scanned and turned out to be a wheel speed sensor. If your afraid of a dealership, trying getting it scanned at an automotive store but usually their scanners arent as acurrate as some of the ones that the dealerships use. I work for a dealership so it all worked out even though i work for Hyundai.

thanx for the input guys.... and i wasnt dissing everyone that works for a dealership, but i had to take my car out of town to get it looked at before because the chevy dealer here said they couldnt drive my car because it had a short shifter in it. they are jerks here, and i dont enjoy messing with them because they think they can just screw over a 19-year-old any day of the week. but i do appreciate the help and sorry if i pissed you off dude

I was also having this same problem on my car. I have a "04 cavalier and almost every time I put it and gear and drive the abs light comes on. It has gotten more frequent recently. I was thinking it might be a bad sensor or a loose connection. I just haven't taken it to the dealer because I hate paying dealer prices (call me ebenezer scrooge!) and I still have not found a local shop that I like or trust. If it is a bad sensor is that something I can change myself?

Heather, most "Autozone" type stores will check the OBD2 code in you car and should be able to tell you what the light is about for free. If it's a wheel speed sensor, I can't help you. I have a rare J without ABS.

Most likely one of the front sensor plugs are loose. Give them a little wiggle and see if the light stays off for awhile. If so try a little dielectric grease.in the plugs.
