Stripped lower caliper bolt?
Saturday, July 08, 2006 8:46 PM
So I was changing my front break pads this evening, and while trying to put the caliper back on, It seems I stripped the lower caliper bolt. Not the threads on the bolt itself, but where it screws into on the car. What can I do to fix this? I have limited tools (pretty much just sockets, wrenches and screw drivers). I really wasn't applying that much force, so i have no idea how this stripped so easily. Any advice anyone?

Sounds like it would be easiest for you to find someone else to fix it or get a yard knuckle.

It may not be stripped. Clean out the bolt so that the socket will go in all the way. Do not tighten the other one down, just start it in. Now try to start the other one. These can be a PITA to get started sometimes... They are pretty hard to strip out unless you crossed the threads or something of the like.

Yeah, pretty sure it became cross threaded. The threads are gone.

Does anyone know if a steering knuckle from a 96 cavalier would work on a 97 sunfire?

I'm thinking that it might not be lined back up (the caliper to the knuckle that is), i've had that happen, didnt take too long to fix the issue, the pads sit a little further out on the bottom if i remember correctly.

95 to 05 knuckles are all the same Cavy or Fires. They can be a pita to get started, but it the bolt goes all the way down into the caliper and still keeps spinning then it's stripped. It happens...

I'd still also recommend finding someone who has more tools and whatnot if you can. It's not bad to do for someone who has done it before. It can be a bit challenging the first time though.

Thanks for the info guys. I currently have a 96 knuckle from the scrap yard sitting in my garage. I a heavy duty mechanic friend comin' over soon to help me. Only tool i don't have I think is a socket large enough to take the barring bolt or what not off. I think it's an 1 1/4" I need, 1 1/8th is the largest I have. Will have to pick that up. ANyone know if it is that size?

Thanks again all.
