Quick lil Bagging Q
Thursday, May 04, 2006 12:42 PM
I'm using multiple batteries(2 marine deep-cycle) to power my compressors and switches/valves.
-I was wondering if I should wire them to my alternator to keep them charged?
-Would this kill the batteries from being charged too far, or would it kill the alternator?
-Do deep cycle batteries run the same current(I believe AC) or would I not even be able to do this?

I am only using one battery (main battery), why would you want to use multiple? Your altenator is only going to charge so many volts, so your average alternator charges what 14 volts while operating?

3 batteries? thats over kill. a simple optima battery will do just fine

So prolly just rock one extra battery in my trunk(optima). Think I should just hook up a charger in my car so I can just plug that thing in when its chillin in my garage?

I would just hook it up to to the regular battery. If are going run chargers, you should have just juice. BUT if you want it set up like that, pluging in everynight and having to worry about dead batteries is a pain so I would look into THIS!!!!!!!!

no just one battery should be fine. get one optima battery and you'll be fine

Your on air mang. Not Juice.
Take all that crap out and run one yellow top under the hood. I ran two Viair 450s off mine with no trouble.

I am all that is man

I'm runnin 2 380s for 2 tanks. they're on all the time... I shouldnt have troubles with that? can i upgrade my alternator? or will i not even need to?

If you are smart you would wire it up to where the compressors can only come on with the car started.

One good battery is plenty. ALL batteries are DC, there is no such thing as an AC battery.
The stock Alternator can pump out up to 100 amps. Viars biggest compressors will only suck down 30 each, and only that under certain conditions.
The stock alternator can put out up to 18 volts. As long as the batter is not fully charged it will regulate the line voltage to approximately 12 volts (actually closer to 12.7). Once the battery is charged, it will not regulate the voltage anymore, but the alternator is computer controlled and will maintain about 12 volts all the time.

Deep cycles run the same voltage because they're made the exact same way, just with thicker electrodes. Regularly discharging any battery more than 50% will kill it within a few cycles. Deep-cycle will just last a few more cycles than a "standard" battery. Nevertheless, don't deep cycle lead-acid batteries. Any time your car is running it should have no problem keeping the batter fully charged.

You can add as many batteries as you like, it will make no difference. Putting 2 marine batties in the trunk will just add weight, might look good if done right too. Would definatly hook them to the alternator to avoid deep-cycling them. The stock alternator can charge 1 battery just as easily as 100 (obviously charging 100 would take 100 times longer).

Charging your batteries with a plug-in charger isn't all that good for them either. The battery maintainers (1 or 2 amps) and microprocessor controled units are an exception to this. They're usually good for a larger battery (like car size or larger).

Note: This stuff only applies to lead-antimony batties (car batties), so don't try to apply it to other types.

Ok, lets say i run the single yellowtop under my hood. Now i need to wire up my compressors, switches, subs, and whatever else to be powered off of that battery. What do I do? run a distributer from the positive side of my battery into my car, then run all electronics off of that?

pretty much... a fused distributor of course... not a straight distribution block...

thats what im doin. ran a 2 gauge power to the rear, then a distributor(fused for both exits) block to the air, and to the system.

works ggod so far. we'll see after i add the new compressor

Think I could get away with running a RED TOP under the hood instead??

Just wondering cuz its what I have now.

^^ same. im running my 450 compressor, my tvs, my ps2 and system all of a regular battery and regular altenator

im running a viair 550 with stock altenator and 1 red top for now. runs fine.
although i will be running an isolated 2nd battery(yellow) for the stereo later, and bumping up the altenator as high as i ossibly can. and plan on running a second compressor.

as for wiring up the relay on your pressure switch, instead of using constant 12, throw a switch in there for when the car is not running. or better yet have it off of the ignition, so it can only kick in if the car is running.
