What are my options for a new transmission.....I know there is a gearing difference between the v6 getrag 5 speeds and the sunbird 2.0 turbo getrag 5 speeds.....would an HM284 work.....would I have to swap bell housings?..........would it have the same gearing? Does anything else bolt up to this motor.....and possibly perform better?
the getrag 282 is your only choice. the 284 was behind the dohc 3.4l in 91-93 only. parts are unavalible for them and there is no way to bolt it up to your 2.0l. the gearing in the sunbird 2.0l turbo is the same as a v6, except for 2nd gear (2.19 for the 2.0t, 2.05 for the v6)there is a lot of different gearing for your 282, they were used in quad 4s and almost every year of those was different gearing.
http://60degreev6.com/showthread.php?t=25036 thats the know gear ratios for the 282.
The trans bellhousing can be taken off the 'bird trans and installed on one of the Q4 trans.
If you decide to go automatic, the 4T40E trans from a Daewoo will bolt up.

Nice!......would there be any benefit to upgrading to a Quad 4 HM282?
I already have a clutchnet 6 puck racing clutch waiting to be installed......will it work in the quad 4 tranny?
is the gearing the same? IF its only the same in certain models.....is there a way of distinguishing it?
There are 3 ways to check the final drive. 1) Locate the option code from the car it's in and look up the OE ratio. 2) Take the case apart and check the gears, or 3) Put the assembled trans in gear, hold one spider gear so it doesn't turn, count the number of times you have to spin the input shaft to get 2 complete revolutions of the other spider gear. The number of turns will equal the final drive ratio times the ratio of the gear you're in. You can also determine the trans gear ratios (1st through 5th) this way.

Awsome......Im sure the quad 4 HM282 is probably made a bit better than my stock 1988 HM282 too.
the all hm 282 transmissions are the same build quality, the only big difference is the gearing. the quad 4 ho, being a high reving motor with no balls under 3000 has lower (numericaly higher) gearing. i posted the link already, it has all the ratios for the 282 for the various applications.
I spent an hour or so reading about the 6 speed in the G6. Kewl. V8 Archie is selling kits to put these into Fiero's, even with the 60 deg V6. Prolly could be adapted for a FWD car. Kewl. car-part.com lists 6 speeds in the $600 - $800 range. Way Kewl. Trans does not fit the 2.0 OHC bellhousing. Definitely not so kewl.
Don't have the links, but if you google for fiero 6 speed swap there should be some good reading.
