So here i am driving along in my neibourhood (thank god) and this happens. Oh crap.. Call a couple buddys for a tow and everyone's busy, so i say @!#$ it, the damage is done...and drove it home. Got the block out, examined the damage and thought i'd share some pic. Not the best but u get the idea. Currently working on making the block out of my "old" 93 LE in my new turbo block. So here ya go and enjoy:
First off here is my baby:
Damage to the block..i can see right through it. lol :
The crank:
The little surprise i found in the pan..YUUMMMMYY!! :
Engine bay:
Top end of the engine:
Turbo, manifold and lines...not much life left in her, doesn't spin too freely:
And my old bird that i drove and beat the @!#$ out of for a year:
And there it is! Let me know what you guys think. And if anyone has a good working turbo for sale plz let me know! And i got one question. Will the clutch on my 93 LE work on the turbo bird? Thanks and enjoy!
Seb
The clutch from the N/A engine will fit, but wont be quite as strong as the turbo clutch.
Good luck on the bottom end swap!
Thanks. Good to hear that it'll work cuz it was changed about a month befor i took it off the road.
Yummm lots of carnage, LOL
atleas you had a N/A block sittin around, just build her back up, oh and if i were you clean yp the engine bay and evreything and maby think about finding a new turbo whyle the engines out, just to make it eazyer.
youll probly have to get the NA block bored out>I had to on mine in order to make the turbo pistons fit
I am in search of a turbo but they are kinda hard to get ahold of arround here. And lucky for me the turbo pistons fit fine in the n/a block.
Got the new bearings, head gasket and stuff. Now just gona find some new rod bolts and i'm good to go! Any idea where to get them? Sites and such. The only place that can get them here is the deal and they want around 12$ a bolt..kinda over the top for me. Anyway, thx for the info.
I wouldenmt goto cheap on rodbolts, well after one snapped on you like that, id get the stongest mofos i could find,
ok put it this way you need 8 rodbolts and there 12bucks a pop so thats 96 bucks, i think 100 bucks is worth it, if you want a strong engine.
i meen thats just me, i dont go cheap when it comes to the internals of a engine.
I see your point. Its just that i can get a set ARP rod bolts but it would take around a month to get them, and i kinda need my car ASAP. Its the only car i have on the road right now. So ya, i think i'm gona go with the dealer bolts. The old ones lasted 16 years and if the new ones can do the same, i think i could live with that
Alright well thanks again and if you hear of someone with a turbo for sale let me know.
Hey Sebastien, I recently dismanlted a 2.0 turbo engine. I have the block, crank, pistons, rods, turbo, oil lines, cylinder head (looks like a milled head, valves look brand new). However, getting the oil pump off the crankshaft seems like an arduous task. Oh well, im from MN if you're interested in anyting just post it on here.
I could use the pistons with rods and the turbo for now. And possibly the head. What was wring with the engine? Really i'm just trying to get this car going again as fast as possible but i toasted one of the pistons and my turbo is almost gone so i want to replace it. As for shipping, i live in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario but i can get stuff shipped to SSM, Michigan. I'll deal with customs myself. Plz llet me know about those items ASAP. Thx. Oh and u can replay here, pm me, or e-mail.
what was wrong with the engine??? i had no clue, hence why i decided to part it out completley instead of selling separate parts for it. E-mail me at stubbyjr@yahoo.com and i should be able to get you some pics. Shipping wise the head/pistojns and rods woul dbe right there at 30 lbs i think. I'll make sure to give you a picture of the cylinder head.. I paid almost $200 for what they did (it's hard to make it by when you don't know anyone in the machining business!) and never got to use it
The turbo spins freely but im not sure of it's reliability. Personally, I think you'd be better of re-building your turbo you got there.
Why will it take a month for the ARP bolts to get there? They're in California and should have them in stock. Is it the Customs thing that'll slow it way down?
If you go the stock bolt route they should cost nowhere near $12 bucks a bolt they're more like $30 bucks for the set. Sounds like they're hosing you (get it? Canada? hoser? Huh? Huh? C'mon!). Anyway you may want to try another dealer.
The Stock turbos are on ebay all the time for cheap money if you want to look. A rebuild kit for yours is around $75 bucks. Is your turbo the original? It looks like the '87-88 style to me. They have the bolt on elbow on the compressor housing that goes to the air cleaner. The later ones have the machined compressor housing that the air cleaner hose slides on and clamps to. Just wondering.
Good job destroying that rod. Bet that ruined your day. Bummer.

Hey brent, i sent an e-mail your way so get in touch with me when u get it.
Alright, good news! Just got off the phone with a local shop, and after a while of explaining how the opel is the same as the sunbird's, i got them to order me a set of rod bolts from ARP and it'll only be around 65$ CND and will be here in 4 to 5 days
Very pleased about this and thanks to you 2litreturbo for convincing me to call everyshop in the book lol. As for your question about my turbo, as far as i know it is the original because it had the stock air canister and has this bigger tube that connects to the end of that elbow. But i said, i can't be sure. I did thing about a rebuild kit but i want something on the car while its being rebuilt (never done one of those so who knows how long it'll take me lol) and i'd even live a spare..cuz you never know.
One more question, for everybody on here, the n/a block does not have a hole for the oil return line. Should i simply drill one out and tap it to make the fitting fit? Or should i just do it on the pan? easier? Simpler? Any advise would be great!
And by the way, i was not a happy camper that day! Eh!
Atta boy! Good job hunting those bolts down.
Not sure if the N/A block has the boss for the return hose. If it did you could just drill and tap it. Otherwise you'll have to weld a fitting into the pan or something like that.
Keep us posted.

sebastien, I don't see your e-mail
make sure it was stubbyjr@yahoo.com .. hope to hear from you soon, BTW I was going to take pictures the other day and the camera broke so i gotta get it replaced tommorrow (hopefully they'll have one ready for me to use right away otherwise this is gonna suck).
Hey Tony, i read your whole cardomain page today and i gotta it was very inspiring. I knew these cars had potential but mid 13s is wild! I'll be following in your footsteps and i hope you won't mind anwering a few questions if something comes up. And for the oil line, i'm gona have to drill out a hole for the return and tap it to fit. I'll take more pics when stuff starts getting put together.
Well i don't know what happen to that e-mail then...did you check your junk mail folder??? I'll send another one right after this. It's just that i need those pistons and turbo ASAP, I gotta put this thing back together...I can't stand my mom's Slow A$$ Accent.

I have a feeling that time won't stand for long.
Drill and tap for the oil line. Make sure to clean all the shavings out. Cast iron shavings tend to get stuck in tight places.
-->Slow
Well you never know. These cars can take quite the beating, with the proper maintenance of course. On a different note, all my parts are ordered and on the way so stay tuned for the reassembly. And thanks a million to Brent Swanson for hooking me up with some good parts, good priced, and on the double!
I think he meant my car will go faster next time we go to the track. Slow has been fixing all my mistakes with the computer tune these last few weeks. I compare it to sending my car to OZ to get a brain.
If it does go faster next time I'll have him to thank. Of course if it goes slower he's buying lunch...
Any questions you have ask away, my email address is on my profile page. I can't answer them all but I'll tell you what I know. Or you could wait till I lay off ebay, this site and Internet porn and finish my Car Domain page. Nah, don't wait that long!

Ah ok i took that wrong. My bad.. Can't wait to see how it does next time. Learning to tune is one of my main goals but my car doesn't really need it yet. Oh well, i love my bird and i don't care what ppl say, even if there is ALOT of hate for sunbirds.
I am calling tomorrow on a front clip from a 90 GT coupe. My turbo is good, but my block looks like yours. If I get the whole clip, I'd be willing to part with the turbo. I'll let you know in a day or two what I find out.
