n00b question about alternators..
Sunday, September 11, 2005 7:01 PM
hey guys, i noticed on another forum today that a guy is selling a 200amp high output alternator. it says it's for a 2.8 / 3.1 Cavalier. what makes an alternator different... like it probably wouldnt fit on my 2.2L right? if it's only the plug that is different, would i be able to switch it or no? any alternators i've bought before were direct-fit... so whats the deal with the V6 Cav alternators... could i make one fit on my 2.2?

thanks!

hey bro, there are several things that can be different from alternator to alternator. First is the plug, the most obvious probably and then you have the bracket positions and then work into more technical things like regulation, output and so on. Changing the plug on an alternator can lead into potentially very hazardous operation. Even if the clock position was correct and the belt pulley was corect I would never go into the daunting task of changing the plug. Not to mention the stuff you can burn up if done incorrectly will cost you a lot more than just a new alternator.

Hope that helps you out!

The 2.2 Cavalier VL has a smaller bodied alternator than any other GM engine I've worked on. I *think* the A/C equipped cars have a larger alternator. I don't know if a physically larger alternator will fit the brackets on the non-ac engine.

Any "CS100" alternator is the same size outside. Same with the CS130. (but they're not the same size as each other.) The CS alternators come in a variety of amperages. Believe it or not, GM books show the internal circuitry is the same in each one. But the outside housings can be very different from each other, so buying any old alternator isn't a good idea unless you're just looking for the internal parts.

I rebuild my own alternators and I swap parts from different ones to get the most output. I don't think it's that tough to do. But if you have an alternator rebuilder near you they're usually very reasonable and they'll often build a "custom" high output alternator for only a little extra cash.

I don't know how others feel about it, but I've had good luck with the "iceberg" rear covers. They do a great job of moving heat away from the internal components of the alternator.

Just to add to Slow's info the numbers after the CS are the stator dia in mm's

CS121 =121 mm dia

CS144=144mm dia etc

and they were /are available in 85, 105 and 144 amps

righton. i do have a starter / alternator rebuilder in my area, i am going to give him a call and see what i'm looking at to get it rebuilt to put out some more amperage. i'm currently running ~800RMS from my mono amp which isnt a WHOLE lot but the alternator is starting to whine a bit.. not whining bad yet and i'm taking it easy on it, but rather than buy another stock alt i figured i'd get some info on higher output ones

thanks for the replies and info!
