Hey Board-
I have an 84 sunbird convertible. It has the black waist trim with the chrome strip. I recent stripped all of it off for paint. As I was cleaning it up I noticed that MOST of the pieces have flexible rubberish trim with a light metal chromish strip that attaches to it. The other pieces have a rubberish trim with a chrome looking plastic molding held on with adhesive. Did the general start to cheapen things mid year in 84? It also happens to be the case that the ones with the plastic silver trim all look like crap and need to be replaced.
Needless to say I know the difference now and will shop appropriately. I have been pulling alot of parts of a 60K 83 J2000 that showed up in a local yard.
Paul
I was just at the local pull-a-part the other day and scouted out the First gens there. The only Sunbirds they had were a smashed up red coupe (86) and a clean (85) four-door. The interior in this one is immaculate, but its tan
The trim on the coupe was not in good shape, and actually had screws holding it on. They drilled drywall screws into the side of the trim!!!!
I'll keep on the lookout for you Paul. I'm always in the junkyard when I have free time. I love that place.

Great to hear from you!
I have not found any of the pieces I am looking for as far as the waist trim. There is an 84 I have been watching that should be in the u-pick it soon (they are processing it).
I picked that 83 clean of everything I needed. My favorite is the awesome leather steering wheel for 3.99!
The car is in for paint and bodywork now. I am looking forward to getting it back, doing the clutch, then adding the mods!
Hopefully back from paint by Dreamcruise time, but not holding my breath.
I will email pics from the preparation.
Paul- just back from another trip to the yard and they didn't have squat! Same 1st gen Sunbirds in there, and a ton of 2nd Gens...but no good trim for you.
Like I said, I'll keep my eye out for ya, I usually take a trip there once a month or so in the hopes of finding gold. About as close as I came was finding a nice underhood lamp for my car
Any luck with your trim yet?

Daryl-
Thanks for looking. I found some *better* trim for some of the pieces. At $2 a piece I could not pass them up. I am still looking for door trim, and the little pieces of trim specific to the 6 light LE front end. I would like perfect ones all around, but I will take what I can get. I would like to restore the interior next, but re-stitching the whole 84 interior to as new condition is a little bit pricey - although that is what I would like best. I may kjust look for some newer front seats for the short term. Newer Grand Am and Sunbird seats are all over the place.
I did get a PERFECT passenger tail light that I was happy about - only $10!
I should have the car back next week, I will post the pics...
Sweet. Looking forward to them.
I got me a new tail light last week ,from chris here on the jbody an replaced the cracked one I had.Its sweet to have a non broken lens now.
i just lost some trim today, it was in fine shape but now its gone! lol
i need a sig!
