How many of you had a first gen j-body as your first car? If it was, do you sitll have it? I'm trying to make up my mind on whether to keep mine or not.
I bought mine back. Still have it, and its not going anywhere ever again.
I learned to drive on it, learned how to work on a car on it, and took my DMV road test in it

i guest i have own total of 5 j-body over the years .
In late 1986 I ordered my first new car....a 1987 Z24 hatchback-blue interior/exterior,5 speed, spoiler package,A/C.....waited 3 months for it!! I had it for 8 years & 120,000 miles, used it to tow my Sea-Doo,did SCCA Autocrossing & bracket drag racing, wrecked it twice & had to put front ends on it twice,it was sunk twice(Yes,SUNK! I left on the beach at Daytona during Spring Break & the tide came in,& it rolled into the water once while I was putting the Sea-Doo in the water-the emergency brake cable broke) Then,in '94 I sold it when I got married & did the SUV thing.......I've had 6 Cavaliers in total(3 first & 3 second gen) & currently have an '86 RS convertible show car-I've had this one 5 years, and it ain't going anywhere!!! It wasnt my very first car(that was a '64 409 Impala) but it was probably my all-time fave!
Bob- Got any pics of your ragtop?
O yea my first car is/was an 86 RS. We bought it in 2000 with 42k miles on it. Im 19, and my sister had the car before I did. Unfortunately my little brother started driving and managed to get into an accident in the car. Its sitting in my driveway with no front from the fenders up but I plan on rebuilding because that thing was a blast to drive, It handles great, still only has 72k on the engine, with lots of life to continue on living!
very nice bob making z24 of a conv. is really sweet
if you ever find a other valance let me know i would buy it off you
yeah bob, nice car..quick question, how did you manage to get those z24 side skirts to fit on there ? im doing the same thing, but im stuck there any other help is akso appreciated thanks
*Nic
Thanks for posting the pic of my car,Jsing! I'd been trying to do it,but wasn't having any luck. Thanks for the compliments guys! That pic was at a show last year,it now has headlight covers that match the custom made grille,it sits about 1 1/2 inches lower,& rides on 16" chrome wheels.I'm just putting the finishing touches on a flip-trunk conversion right now-it's not as easy as I thought it would be! As for the sideskirt installation,I cut the skirts so they sat flat against the body & dont go under it(convertibles have that frame brace that runs along the bottom) & then made my own mounting kit for the skirts to sit in & they are also screwed into the body at the ends. The door filler panels are easy-you just have to drill the holes into the doors to accept the studs on the filler panels(although.....it's real tough getting your hands down in the doors to balt them on!!!! Hope this helps! Later...........
BTW........I thought I'd throw this in for a laugh-I did that entire Z24 conversion(cowl induction hood swap, both front & rear bumper covers, side skirt installation & stripped the entire car down to bare sheetmetal) right here in my apartment complex parking lot, using no power tools!!! It was something to do during my divorce exile, lol. Over this past winter,I gutted the interior & replaced the floorboards, carpeting, recovered the seats & put everything back in in the parking lot also! Good thing I have understanding nieghbors!
First Car (that I picked out)-
I still have it and my high school girlfriend (now wife). My kids love it and there are very few 6 light front ends around here. It is here to stay. It was on a *vacation* for about8 years but it is back on the road as of 2004.
It still feels quick and plays that kick ass turbo soundtrack!
LONG LIVE THE MID-80S J-CARS!!!
lol guys my first car was a 90 Mitsubishi Eclipse and im glad its gone. That pos was the worst buy I ever had. fast as hell tho
