Does anyone on here have one thats hopped up? I've been thinking about getting on, and thought it would be sick to put in the ecotec crate engine, maybe even the supercharged one, and then some STS or CTS rims and suspension upgrades. Can you swap ecotecs into first gen cars easily?
no, there is no easy swap of an ecotec into a first or 2nd gen. you would need to fab up all custom mounts, run stand alone fuel system, ect. its not an easy job
as for swapping caddy wheels, those you listed are 5x114.3 bolt pattern, and wont fit onto a j body.
best thing you could do- do a 3400 v6 swap into it, koni struts (you can mod the 3rd gen ones to fit into a 1st gen), lowering springs, and the 92 up front brake swap.
I don't want a V6 I want a I4. Hmmm... How much do people usually charge to fab custom mounts and stuff? And also what bolt pattern do J-Body's use?
the bolt pattern of any j-body is 5x100mm
custom mounts are going to cost you a ton. you have to spend a lot of time getting the motor set into the right spot and aligning it, then make the mounts. its not an easy job.
this would be a very pricey job as well. figure $1500 for a used ecotec (or $4000 for the sc crate motor), $2000+ for a stand alone fuel/spark managment, $600+ for a tranny, who knows how much for custom axles, mounts, ect. this would likely be a $6000+ venture.
if you must have a 4 cyl, then the 2.0l turbo motor from a sunbird, firenza, or grand am would be a better route. its 155hp with lots of potential, and it will bolt right in as it was used in other j-bodies. another route would be a 2.3l quad 4. they are still a lot of work, but not as costly.
6 grand isn't too bad. the supercharged ecotec would be sick too. I'm also contemplating a contour or a focus, and I could get one of those for what it's gonna cost to built the cimarron how I would want. Plus they're hard to find.
put in the quad 4. you only have to weld in the tranny mount bracket, if your donor car has the front motor mount on the subframe.

"The same thing we do every night, try to make the SVC go faster!"
What cars is the quad 4 from?
i have a quad 4 in my 95 grand am.

quad4's come in 95 gts and z24s as well as L bodies, N bodies and W bodies maybe others too
well the Cimarron had four cylinder as well so why would be all that hard to put in another four cylinder.
about all the 2.0l ohv and 2.3l quad 4 have in common are the fact that they have 4 cylinders. nothing else is the same, so its not an easy swap.
This comment was straight out of Car and Driver July 05 issue. This is there 50th anniver so there looking back at just about everything. So here is the headline But does it have the V-8-6-4 Engine? Cadillac introduces the 85hp Cimmaron, the most public mistake in the division's long history of optimistic bloviating. At least the Cimmaron doesn't look like a cadillac. This is because it's a cavalier."With a little polishing here and there," we predict,"the cimmaron could actually make it as a world class sedan."HOW EXACTLY? I was lmao when I read this comment just had to share it with all of U!

I keep seeing this type of response. Why, exactly, does anything not factory need a "stand alone fuel system?"
An eco engine with a manual transmission could use the ecm out of your car!!! Just like a stand alone, it would require tuning. But it's a lot cheaper than $2000. And with research it may be possible to use an ecm from a 90-91 Lumina 4T60E to handle an electronic trans.
Think about this...
You aren't asking the aftermarket to supply you with an engine.
You aren't asking the aftermarket to supply you with a transmission.
You aren't asking the aftermarket to supply you with the car.
Why automatically ask the aftermarket to supply the engine management?

Why couldn't you just run the OBDII system out of the same year car? The worst part to figure out would be the gauges.
the easiest way to run an eco would be stand alone. to use the obd2 pcm, you would need to do a lot of wiring to get it to start, never mind keeping it clear of codes and out of limp mode.
you are right, you could use an early ecm thats obd1, however, the lumina wont work as they were all v6 cars. you would need to find something that is 4 cyl with dis (2.0l ohc mpfi mabey???) . as for running the 4t40e trans, just forget going obd1. there was no 4 cyl that got the 4t60e, and even if there was, the requirements of the 4t40e are way different than the 4t60e (hardware wise). you would have to run a 5 speed, or get a stand alone controller for the 4t40e.

The Lumina will work for the engine. The same computer program used in the Lumina with electronic transmission is used in the J car with non-electronic transmission. The code can be set for 4 or 6 cylinder engines. I'm using turbo Sunbird code, normally used with 4 and 6 cylinder distributor engines, in a 4 cylinder DIS application. It can be done.

Are you sure? People said the same thing about the 4T60E and 4L60E and it turns out that it's not such a different beast. GM doesn't make major changes to control strategy and hardware requirements lightly.
