I have a 85 cav with tbi and went to auto zone to buy a new injector back at xtmas.SO I installed it and noticed while it did fit it was somewhat different in appearance but fit.The problem is the filter is made into the injector instead of a slip on filter like the OEM and once installed it LEAKED like a biotch.I returned it and got my money back and showed auto zone a pic from advance auto's site indicating that there part was WRONG, even tho it fit.I replaced the injector today and the car runs like a dream,it was dumping to much fuel all the time.I guess after 20 yrs the injector was just worn out.I wanted to share this so if any of u ever change urs out go to ADVANCE AUTO and get a exact OEM style injector so u do not go thru the same b/s even tho mine was defective.I realize they may have changed the part some over time but ,the auto zone one dumped more fuel than the old one and the filter on it sucked.Just for ur info .
Thanks for the heads up. I've been thinking of replacing mine just because of its age, and its a single injector so it can't be THAT expensive. Glad to hear that Advance has it! I've had good luck with them locally, and will never set foot in an Auto Zone. I've been burned by those idiots in the past.

No problem I also noticed that auto zone carries the same brand GP sorenson .I think they do use the same GP part # but, they are using a different part for some other Gm application.I went to return it and they pulled another off the shelf at auto zone and it was identical to the one I had originally bought.I do believe somehow that's there problem, since advance had pics on there website it was 100% like the oem in the car. Here's the part # for advance auto's 800-1802N Gp sorenson for ur info.
Oh the price is 74.99 thus tax for got that. At advance auto
Thanks for the info, Ron.

Just thought I would let u know that my chiltons book is great for the directions on the how to remove and reinstall but ,the haynes manual for the 82-94 has pics showing the fuel meter cover and the book part # is 38015 if u do not have it.I highly recomm the book so u get the injector seated properly when u do replace ur injector darryl.U just need to make sure u get the small pin on the injector lined up rite in the small pocket inside the fuel injector cavity as they call it.
Did anyone read this?
http://www.j-body.org/forums/read.php?f=29&i=45069&t=44184#45069 I posted it a while ago and I've still been getting a lot of questions that are in there. If you would have read it you wouldnt be having this problem, and I bet the parts stores dont know about this either and are giving you what you asked for cause you werent that specific.
In 1986 (the first year for TBI) the 2.0 had a model 300 TBI and then from 1987 - 1991 the 2.0 had a model 700 TBI. So, ron You say you have a 85 with TBI which is probobly a late production model cause most 85's were carbed wich means you have the model 300 TBI and all the auto parts stores carry the injector for the model 700 TBI cause thats what all TBI sunbirds have except for that one year (86) and the few exceptions, like you in 85.
The production date for my car is july of 85 so late production is true. But at least advance had the right part exact to the letter in all aspects. And the power diff with the new injector is unreal compared to the old worn one the original that was just like 20yrs old and dieing. Thanks for the input and yes its def the 300 the pics in my manuals indicate a exact replica of whats on sunny my car it being yellow.I just posted this so everyone would know what to look for so they did not make the same mistake I did with auto zone.
Reviving this for darryl scott.Man this is way back man the years have rolled fast since I did this fun.
Of course I have to read this and find I have more to learn...
I thought all the Js had TBI (Throttle Body Injection if I got that right).
My 1984 Hawk had the 2.0 and it had the injectors, I remember it even looking like it simply pulled out of a plastic clip and a new one could be snapped back in, am I wrong about this? Was there two little squirters in the setup?
Were there really full-carb setups on early Js, or am I missing something in the wording of Tyrin's post where he says '86 was the first year of TBI?
I currently have a March 1985 Hawk, with a 1.8 and that looks to have the same set-up as my '84 2.0 as far as the fuel injectors are concerned.
The early 1.8 and 2.0 OHV motors were carbureted.
Didn't your Skyhawk come with a 1.8 SOHC? I thought they stopped coming with the 2.0 OHV in 83.

Nope, factory 2.0. The 2.0 was used for a while beyond '83, but I never heard anything about mine or later years being an OHV (that doesn't mean it wasn't, I just don't remember that being the case).
One of the Hawks I looked at before buying my current one two years ago was an '87 and it also had a 2.0. The motor looked a little different than I remember my 84, but it was still a 2.0
Yeah. The 2.0 OHV in the '87 would've been a newer version. They did away with the iron head and replaced it with an aluminum one in 87. Same engine I had in my 88 Cavalier VL. They also got rid of the distributor and went with direct ignition. I much prefer this version of the 2.0 myself.

Well from specs via chiltons manual the 82 came with the 2brrl rochester E2SE.Also the single bore model 300(like mine) were used on the 83-861.8L OHC engine and the model 500 tbi was used on 83-86 2.0L OHV engines. Most of first gens seemed to be either tbi or multiport fi overall.

Ok some info on TBI rebuilds, sorry no pics I would have to check my pics to post them.Maybe later this week. And yeah darryl is doing his.
Gp sorensen tbi rebuild kit 96-617, Gp sorensen fuel injector harness(2 wires) 800-9225,Gp sorensen fuel injector 800-1802N granted these numbers could have changed!!! but are the exact items for the rebuild and the REBUILD KIT is for the 300,500, and 700 tbi so it is fine for our first gens. There may some slight variations in the 300/500 I suspected mine to be a 3 based on my chiltons, but whatever. The kit had everything I needed when I did rebuild it years ago.I do need to do the fuel pressure regulator being it was fine back then.BUT you can buy the whole part instead of dissasembling it,and advance, napa do carry this,I have checked a month or more back out of curiosity. Each year could have varied on the TBI due to production and gm being so wishy washy and changing things.Keep in mind when gm switched from carb to tbi they upgraded the tbi models somewhere I figure betwn any number yr 84-86 IDK really.Being I have seen 83s with tbi I figure it is actually a 300 being the early version, and maybe later 85-86 went 500, I just do not have the specs to prove one way or the other.Just educating any who have no idea what the h-ll they have and where to buy stuff and what they might need.Btw had to dig all these old orig part boxes out I kept zip locked and OLD parts for refer.Good fun umm No
