New 1/4 mile times for the Sunbird
Thursday, July 01, 2004 8:29 PM
Went to the track last night and managed to run a 13.61 at 96.22 right off the bat! That was the best run of the night because traction turned into a problem thereafter.
I ran a 13.98, two 13.8's and a 13.7 at 98 which wasn't too bad. This is still with the stock 43 MM throttle body too. I have a Fiero 54 MM one to try as soon as I get a chance. Oh boy!

Congrats Tony. That's a half second improvement over your previous best, correct? I can only see it getting faster.

Thanks Jeremy. 14.17 was my best last year so I shaved about 1/2 second, yeah. I watched the video of my runs tonight and realized I screwed myself out of 1 mph on my sig! I updated it tonight - every one counts right? I'm hoping it'll run 13.40's before the year is over at around 100-101 mph. I still have that new engine and tranny to finish and install some day too if I ever get the time!
Anything new with your car? How'd you make out on your job hunting?

tony I'm assuming you're mods list is a little out of date right? you still using GN intercooler, and GTP turbo? whta do you have the boost set at? Still running stock ECM and injectors? How about fuel pressure have you done anything with that?
Re: New 1/4 mile times for the Sunbird

Still using the GP turbo, stock injectors, stock regulator and fuel pressure, stock ECM and chip.
The only changes since last year are the GP turbo and when I changed that I had the necks on my intercooler cut off and replaced. The stock positioning of the necks didn't work well for my desired charge pipe plumbing and the stock neck on one side was only 2". So I had 2 1/2" necks welded on both sides at the proper angle for me. I also changed the inlet piping to 2 1/4" but the outlet pipes are still 2". The turbo is at 17 psi which just happened to be where the wastegate was set when I finished the swap so I just left it there.
My next step will be the Fiero throttle body when I get around to it. My biggest problem is launching it. If I leave with more than 5 lbs of boost it just spins too much and I can't do better than a 2.00 plus 60 foot. That 13.61 was with a 1.94 60 foot and I left at 5 lbs. The ultimate fix will be when the new tranny goes in with the LSD unit but I'm not doing that until I swap the engine which will still be a while. I'm kind of curious how it will do with the old engine and tranny with the larger throttle body. I'm hoping it'll go 13.40's but who knows? It may go BOOM!

What engine is the Fiero throttle body off?

Tony that's amazing... Course you're on slicks so that helps!

Have you ever detected any knock? do you run with a scan tool, or monitor the knock sensor? last year non intercooled at 14 psi out of my tiny t3 I was starting to get knock.. I'm hoping the intercooler takes care of that this year and lets me up the boost a bit further.. I've still got a stock fuel pump.

The BFG drag radials definitely help but tire spin is still a problem. I have a new tranny built with an LSD to install someday when I have some time. That should be the ultimate fix I hope.
I thought I heard a little knock on that 13.6 pass so I added a couple gallons of104 octane unleaded race gas. I don't have a scanner installed onboard but I suppose I could use my Snap-On scanner when I made a pass.

The Fiero throttle body is for the 2.8 engine. It's not a bolt on but it can be made to fit with some creativity! The stock one is 42-43 MM and the Fiero is 54 MM which is good for about 20 HP I'm told.

Tony-

That is awesome. That time is right around what my 94 Camaro puts down. Keep up the good work. I am going intercooler shopping for my 1.8 and will be looking for a bigger turbo/bov etc.

Good Work!

Thanks Paul. I always hoped it would run 13.50's as my ultimate goal and now that I'm close to it I'm still a little surprised at how simple it really was. I'm a little surprised that modifying these things hasn't been more prevalent through the years. The Ford 2.3's have a large following and this seems as responsive to me. Oh well, I guess I'm just happy the parts are relatively cheap!

Hey, good luck man. Glad to see Ned's old car is still out there kicking. I owe a good portion of where I am with mine to him and I haven't forgotten it. I was hoping he'd do a web page about the car or something but it sounded like he wasn't too interested. Maybe you should do one?

hey man, good times you got there. maybe i'll take mine out to the track if its cool enough on friday. should have the new FPR in so it'll run again. did you get your troubles worked out yet? i cant wait to see how much more those 450's i put in deliver (if they even work..hahaha). i'll do a 10psi non intercooled time in, should be a good run. next thing im doing to my engine is changing out rod bolts and rings/berings (just because...my engine only has 20,000 miles) and then im gonna put on a nice front mount and TB and run steady 17psi. with my turbo, that should be plenty fast.
its only a sunbird

The Black and Blue bird just sold for $550 on eBay.

Someone got a deal.

I wish I would have known it was Neds.

Let's hope it went somewhere it'll be taken care of. It'd be nice if Ned bought it back but I doubt it.

You need to go to Darkmucks LT3 web site and see what others are doing and to talk about what you're doing. We can all learn a little from each other.

Dang ned's car sold for $550 holy crap.. it was sort of offered to me a while back but unfortunatly there wasn'pt a lot on it I wanted...

I'm going to try and be more active with you guys again since there is a lot I've done to the bird recently including running my best time at lower boost 11 psi and got a 14.6@95 with a 2.2 60' (street tires)
