Any thoughts on shipping costs and advice?
Sunday, July 15, 2012 1:12 PM
Hi Guys,

I'm keeping my fingers crossed because I finally have a lead on getting an '87 Cowl Induction Hood for my car. Was wondering if anyone has been involved in the process of shipping and/or receiving something large like this? Any thoughts on shipping costs, who to use as a delivery agent (UPS/Fed Ex), and best way to pack it up?

Huge thanks for your help and advice!

Kind regards,

Steve.

It's definitely within the size limits, although you will pay an irregular shape surcharge. It probably weighs right around 35-40 lbs. Do all your estimating at 40+ lbs just to be safe. I would throw some corner protectors on it, plastic if you can, then a layer of cardboard. Don't expect the paint to be pristine unless there is a plastic sheet between it and the cardboard because it WILL rub. UPS is going to be the most expensive way to ship it, followed by FedEx and then DHL. You can do estimates on any of their websites. If you're shipping US to US address, I have heard good things about Greyhound freight service, but personally, I've never used it. I do know that you will need to go pick it up at the terminal, whereas UPS/FedEx will go right to your house.

I have LOTS of experience of shipping items the smallest to biggest.I have shipped doors is that big enough.I can tell you fed ex will not ship a hood it is too big and while under the weight class of 70lbs maybe packed correct it will be too heavy and large.UPS will cost you dearly and suggest going thru a LTL company (less than truck load) that is easy enuff.Tips being packed solid with foam around the hood corners and sides and placed foam on the center front and back are a must to prevent mushing. Then have wrapped in two layers of bubble wrap side to side and top to bottom. Then placed inside a cardboard box completely sealed and marked with like( lay flat, keep up right,DO NOT stack on) this matters.Greyhound does shipping you simply take to a terminal and get it shipped to said closest destination and the person who is buying it simple picks up the item at the terminal.LTL companies you could simply have shipped from origination to closest terminal and go pick up to avoid costly lift gate cost where they take it directly to you if you have a dock or not.I shipped the 2 doors boxed (and yes the whole door) and packed up by me and boxed and placed on a pallet weight was 245lbs cost 268.00.Granted a hood is lighter and NO pallet required just make sure the box for the hood is doubled up on the sides for drops, sliding around.I hope my little tutorial has answered some if not all your ?s.Most LTL companies will do a estimate but true cost is based on weight (they weigh it once dropped off) and charge point to point.I used southeastern freightlines here in nc but serve the east coast.Do some homework on ship cost.Grey hound is probably cheaper overall and check out there site online for details I know people who have gone this route to ship big stuff.

I knew Ron would have the answers!!

I'll step in here and just add that since this hood is so hard to find - go the extra bit to make sure you get it undamaged. Would be a shame to pinch a penny just to have the hood busted - ( are these hoods fiberglass?)

Another thought might be to if you should ship at all - perhaps one weekend drive to destination and pick it up yourself -if it cost $268 to ship those doors it might have been easy enough to drive down and pick them up - that way you know you will bring it home intact.

What are the FedEx limits? I know a hood will ship through UPS just fine. It's something like 150 inches length plus girth.

Got hose doors that Ron is talking about and they were VERY well packed and arrived undamaged (Ron got compliments from my warehouse crew at work). Now just have to find the time to work on the project.

Idk James I have just shipped so much thru fedex and not sure on size limits. But I do know most items sent thru them and no where size wise alloyable unless maybe some exceptions based on if it is lighter than 70lbs on recall.I know ups can ship hoods bc they are a LTL company as well however something that big would ship thru there LTL side not the brown package trucks u see rolling all over town. There again they might but checking with a local ups store they could answer that better. If you ship LTL with UPS it cost dearly. And John glad all the time I took to pack those doors got them to you unharmed and thanks for the props from the crew who unpacked them.Tired as dirt nice long day and winding down.

A hood can go in the brown package cars. I know because I worked there and have loaded them before As long as it's under 165" length plus girth and under 150lbs it will go in the brown truck. Anything over that goes freight. That's why I'm wondering what FedEx limits are. Personally, I would use FedEx if at all possible. If not, I would use a smaller freight company or Greyhound.
Also- unless you want to pay someone to package it for you, don't use the UPS store. They are not in any way affiliated with UPS other than they pay to use the name. They're ownde by Mailboxes Etc. Shipping with them actually costs more than if you went to a UPS customer counter and did it right there.

For a part that size, go with Greyhound. (just make sure it is packed >>VERY WELL<< )
