87 Wagon # 3 "Chelsea"

Drove it back from Asonia CT at the end of march, it has 46,000 miles (NOT turned), with hardly no rust at all, the front and rear bumper covers need replacing. The down side is that they smoked in it and they burnt the console, the radio/bezel and the seats have a few burn holes, but all that can be fixed.
It's the body I am after....... lol

Pics when I got it home:

Came with the cargo cover too

Since it not in my nature to leave vehicles untouched, I fixed a few things and added some options of my own:

Fixed all the leaks and tuned up the engine, added a 2nd Gen strut bar and a Auto-dimming rear view mirror with compass and temperature

Added rear cargo area light ( fist time I have ever seen a wagon with out one), then door pin switches to turn on the dome lights when the doors are opened, and wired the Gate Ajar switch to activate the dome lights too. On the reverse, I also added a dome light override switch (not shown) to turn off all the dome lights.

Pop-up Sun Roof and re-covered Headliner and Visors

Since I have another set of buckets from my 87Z, I decided that I wanted to fix all the cigarette burns and at the same time add Seat Heaters.
Time to make 4 into 2

Replaced the stock radio, bezel and console, and put the seat heaters switches in the console.

Finished Pics with windows tinted to 25%

That’s all for now

laterz

Wow that is some good stuff.I like your improved stuff and as for the seats covers where did you get the covers.Reason I ask on mine the drvr side seat is split in the cloth and finding a place with a exact match for me to recover it would be nice. Not a wagon guy but with what you have done it looks pretty nice and great work.NICE!!!! at least you can appreciate a 1st gen like WE do here. There is a reason for it being a 1st gen (first gens are the best at least TO ME).

Hey mr. Crashdummy. You had helped me a lot with my digidash install on v6z24. My name is cavalier3400z there. I don't me to hijack your post but I have everything working but the speedometer. I paid $140 for a new sensor and it still reads zero. Also did you ever try anything with those heated and vented seats the come in the new cars. I was thinking about installing a set but I don't know how the vent.

On the inside my car looks like a fighter jet.

The list of Wagon owners seems to be growing!!

WOW!!

...................where have you been hiding...LoL

I was already intrigued. Then I took a look at your other 2 wagons on your profile, seen all that you have been up to.

Simply.....AMAZING

4 87' cavaliers all blue interior , all the wagons are RS's and one Z24 - man you really know what you are looking for! To find a set of vehicles all like that had to be quite a feat!!

Some of your mods are so inspiring - such as replacing the prop rod with a liftgate strut!!
I had been pondering a sunroof down the road as well - your size (17" x 35") looks like it is just perfect for the wagons!
I really like those stock steel wheels too - are they 13"?? This gives me something to look forward to looking for down the road too!!

I'm just amazed by all you have and have accomplished. Hope you will continue to shower us with more photos of your work, as well as the other Cavaliers you have. You are very inspiring!!

Like you, I am in need of a headliner replacement too. Do you have any suggestions as to the removal and replacement of it? These are the biggest of them and I'm afraid of breaking it during removal and replacing. Was thinking about a sunroof when I go to replace the headliner. What might I be looking at for both if I have it done by a shop?

Thank You for sharing your cars and your work!!

That is the first cargo cover I've ever seen in a Wagon - didn't even know they had them....LoL

BTW - what color did you choose for your headlining material - looks like a very nice matchup!!

My 87Z has the same seats so I just swaped the cloth over on the passenger side and cut and sewd in replacement panels where needed on the drivers side. I will be putting a leather interior in the Z when I restore it

I agree the First Gens are the best gen, the first car I drove was my mom and dads 84 cavi. I did a few mods to that thing too.. lol
the first car i owned was my 87Z

Hey!
naa done worry about the hijack your good.
if you want give me a call at my shop this afternoon or tomorrow and we can talk it over, the #'s are on my website.

The factory cool seats are way too expensive to play with and they have modules that plug into the BCM.
There are aftermarket cool seats out there but are not reliable.
Heat seats are no problem in anything cloth or leather

YES! me too! In all the wagons I have looked at, have seen online, and owned, not one has had the cargo cover. Also, another oddity was that this one did not come with the cargo area dome light. Every one I have see had this.

It is so close you would think its factory, the color is Navy Blue

Yes, those rims are on the Celebrity's too, I like them too! I have had 3 of them, one wagon, (Yes I love wagons) and Two eurosports. Those cars fly with the 2.8 and a few small mods!

Lately I have seen more then a few Cutlass Ciera Wagons, Im wondering where have these been coming from??

What can I say, it’s an addiction! Back in 91 through 94, modding my 87z and then my first 87 wagon was what started it for me. Haven’t looked back since.

I like what you have done with your wagon too, the paint scheme rocks keep it up!

For 3 years I was looking for those wagons, and finally found them, the problem is I STILL looking!! lol

The 17x35 fits perfect it sits right even with the roof rack and yes, those are 13” wheels, they are the same style as on the Celebrity

Removing the headliner is easy, just take your time, the most common place it breaks is by the visor holes and by the coat hangers. Repairing them is easy just glue some vinyl to the back of the hardboard. What I have done is put a strip of Velcro on the roof bow behind the front dome light and on the back of the headliner board, in the same spot, that way the dome light is not the only thing holding the headliner up in the center.

If you’re going to have a shop do it, do your research and make sure they have a good reputation for their work and they will stand by it.

Thanks much!

Next to White, it's my second favorite color.

Where did you get the chrome rocker covers? Never seen them before on a J.

Came standard on Verts and l on Type 10's ,,, You can take the black painted ones and strip the paint off with paint remover and polish them up.

John Masson (84conv) wrote:I got two painted rocker moldings to experiment with. The one on the right was painted and it now looks like new except for the three dings. These are 100% better than the ones I now have on the brown Cav. If anyone is interested I used paint stripper to remove the paint. Then I used a three step buffer wheel that I got at Home Depot to polish them. Next step was metal polishing cream from Walmart and used this MULTIPLE times and finally wax. I am going to try this with some painted wheel moldings next.

How'd you get the Styrofoam from the headliner so clean ?
I couldn't get all of the old foam backing from the fabric off of the styrofoam when I did my headliner, so now I have to take it out to recover it again. If you have any tips on how to get the fabric to stick better (especially in the heat of the sun), it would be greatly appreciated.
Oh, and by the way, nice wagon ! You're giving me a couple of good ideas for my Swaggin' !

You have to get all of the loose stuff of first, then we took Naptha and a few old denim jeans cut into rags, and went at it. The jeans are coarse enough to take the old foam off, but not damage the hardboard like sandpaper would. It does take a fair amount of elbow grease to get it all off.
The glue we use is Weldwood Landau top & trim adhesive, its heat resistant to 120+. U can get it in gallon form and any upholstery place

Thanks, yours looks good too!
