Since it was brought up in another thread…
Just learned I can swap the brakes from a 92+ and have disc brakes in the rear.
Is there a kit, or do I need to grab some stuff from a junkyard and just install new rotors/pads?
If I don’t have the clearance with my 13” wheels, will I have enough when I get 15x7 wheels from a Fiero (OK, not getting them direct from a Fiero, just OEM wheels from Tirerack).
When I do this, do I need new shocks? I already NEED new shocks, but am waiting until I have the $ to get the struts at the same time.
Or did I misunderstand the whole thing and I’m stuck with my drums on the back?
You misunderstood, but you're not stuck with drums. No J body ever came with discs in the rear. There are a few different options for adding discs (Neon, Daytona, Saturn, or aftermarket). The wheel bearing to axle bolt pattern is the same from 82-05, so any rear brake swap that can be done on a 2nd or 3rd gen can be done on a 1st gen (apart from the wheel size issue, and 15s should clear the Neon and Saturn swaps).
If you want to upgrade the front brakes, you would need to swap to the 92+ setup. It's a direct bolt on (spindles, calipers, rotors). The wheel bearing is the same. All the front brakes are the same from 82-91 and then from 92-05. Any of the aftermarket "big brake" kits ca be used with the 92+ parts (Wilwood, Baer, etc).
Do you NEED shocks when doing brakes? No. One doesn't have an effect on the other. It may be easier and ore convenient to do all the work at the same time though. I would recommend that if you do the 92+ front swap that you wait to do the struts at the same time though, since it does involve unbolting the spindle from the strut.
Just FYI for anyone reading this- most of the front suspension is interchangeable for all generations (not counting sway bars and control arms). There are also quite a few parts from other cars that will bolt right up to the J. I recommend a quick visit to www.v6z24.com and check out the Suspension forum to see the FAQ there. Just about every upgrade or change that can be done on a 2nd gen will work on a 1st gen.
