We have an 1986 Cavalier RS Convertible. I do not know where the engine serial number is located. Any assistance in this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
What engine is in it? Are you sure its not in the vin #?
Jason, sorry, I am a new owner and need to get educated on J-Body specs. It is a 2.0 4 cyl. Automatic. I am not aware of the engine number being in the VIN. Is that true? If so, then I have the VIN. Thanks for the help.
On your VIN on the dash the engine code is the 8th digit. I am guessing it should be a P with a 2.0 tbi being a rs.Unless I am not thinking things out. There is tons of info here and IF you need some parts I (think) I am the general find parts for my car guy overall for 1st gens.Check out my thread below found some cool stuff from the pull a part so you can see the things I get.Oh and welcome to the forums!
Hi Steve!! Welcome Aboard!! :-)
Had to wait till I got some time to get a few photos for you. I have an '86 Cavalier Wagon with a replacement engine. It has a plate glued over the original Engine Serial #, so it is pretty easy to spot here and will show you where to look for yours. Yours should just be stamped into the cast here, and if it is the original engine, the last numbers of that serial # should match up exactly to the last numbers of your VIN # on the windshield. So here we go.

This is a good photo to get your references - note dipstick, exhaust manifold & starter locations to give you the reference.

...and here is a few more closer in just for kicks. You might also try using a camera on yours, it really helps since it's hard to get down in there to see. Hope this helps you out a little.

Well, wadda ya know!!! It is a small world - even here on J-Body!!
Looks like we have the family on board!! Could this be a first? And "The Blue J" looks as good as ever!!
It's a pleasure having you here on the forum!! :-)

Guys, thank you for your wonderful responses. Yes, Daryl is my son who has given mom and dad "stewardship" over the family Cavalier. We bought this dealer promo in early '88 and has been with us since. Daryl has collected some new projects and asked if we would take care of the '86 RS for time being. We drove it home and are working on the rack and pinion and the fuel pump. Just registered it for the 49th VCCA Central Meet in Sandwich, IL. this July in the HPOCF (Historical Preservation of Original Chevrolet Features) Class. It will look great with an oval on the front! We will stay in touch.
That is cool.Obviously daryl has done alot to maintain over the many years being on here sharing his little projects. So if you ever need something part wise no longer made let me know.I generally find alot of original parts used on junkyard js that just are not made anymore.Good luck and glad you joined in and have fun with it.
Thanks Ron. We will continue calling it the "Blue J." As we speak we are repairing the rack and pinion set up and the fuel pump. Getting ready for the cruise and show season. Pictures and stories to continue. Thanks all.
