i read all the write ups and everything but i have no idea what i'm doing and drilling out rivets sounds hard and i'd hate to screw up. i've had my replacement motor for about 5 months now and just have never put it in. wondering if anyone in my area has ever done this and might be able to help me. of course i'd be willing to pay them for doing this.
why not just try a dremel and cut them off. i too have to install a new one this weekend and its the first time i will attempt it. from the way it sounds, it might be better to just cut the rivets off than drill them out
u think that would be best? or should i buckle down and send it somewhere to fix it?

so be careful
and if you replace the rivets with nuts and bolts, make sure you use lock washers
yeajust think about it really. if you dont mid spending the money to have a shop do it then bring it. i rather just tkae my time and figure it out myself. i was looking over all the posts about them and how to take out the motor and all. then i looked at my door. the window is easy to unbolt, taking it out will take a lil while to tkae it out. then cutting the rivets. i think this will be the biggest amount of time in the project. then you just have to figure out how to wiggle everything out. putting it back together should be somewhat easier.
how much oyu think a garage will charge? i already have the motor

to be honest i think it would prolly be worth whatever cost a garage would charge
it was the worst thing ive ever had to replace or put into a car ever
ok i've decided to get a shop to it just curius what u think it might be for just the installation.

Wide Body Progress
this is funny cuz i am in the same boat. I have had my motor for a while now also. It sux cuz its my driver side so it won't go down. A told a friend of mine that i needed to get a rivet gun from auto zone and he said that it'd b easier to just screw them in and take out the rivets.
I was thinking about taking it to a shop/dealer too. let us/me know what happens and if u should take it to the shop about how much it costs.
I didn't do it myself, but I was there every step of the way watching while my fiance & brother did it. It didn't look THAT hard. They both have basic mechanical knowledge & managed to do it with only instructions from others that my fiance found by searching this site. My brother has air tools, but a dremel would be pretty much the same thing - use it to saw off the heads of the rivets. They used a drill to pop out the centers. It was pretty self explanitory as they went along, what to take off & such.
The reason that I had them do it was because I got a quote while getting a recall taken care of. I can't remember which it was, but either $600 or $800, a total retarded overpriced service! Even the guy giving me the quote couldn't hold in the laughter at how stupid high it cost. That was at a GM dealership though, perhaps a small shop would be cheaper.

ha... i did mine and it was one of the easiest things i've had to do to the cavalier. drill 5 rivots, pull the old motor, line up the new motor, bolt in. took me an hour tops.
it's not rocket science by any means.
wow. installed this damn motor today. what a workout it was. i was at it from 11:30am until 7pm. had a big break in between though to eat and get some nuts and bolts. the longest parts of the job was getting the rivets off and then trying to screw the damn thing back in. i had no room to hold the nuts and had to get creative and use some needle nose pliers.
all in all the operation was a success. i finally can use my drivers side window again and wont have to get crappy gas mileage because i have the a/c on. its great feeling that breeze again and just in time for a nice week of 80 temps.

When I typed the last part, I talked to my fiance & asked him if he remembered something being difficult to reach. This reminded me of what it was, putting the bolts in. I think my brother used one of those telescoping magnets to get them to where they needed to be. In total, I think it took them 3 hours.
