anyone know if there is an actual law in PA that bans any exhaust mod? i searched all over and all i could find is a pending bill to ban exhaust modifications, but no laws. reason Im asking is that i got a ticket last night, and the cop didn't exactly sound very sure that it is an actual law. ive never heard of it being illegal...but mabey a new law was passed that I didn't know about

they can get you for noise and for not having a cat, beyond that its pretty free

well it is noisy, but the cat and header are both CARB approved, and the cop said that its not because of emmissions, he said its illegal simply because its modified. I guess its not the end of the world anyways, its only a 106 dollar fine, and i was thinking of making my car stock again to sell it anyhows...guess pa just made up my mind.
but still, if there is no actual law, then hey, at least thats $106 that I won't have to pay
guess i should be thankful he didn't see my nitrous bottle that is hooked up...just found out that on the streets a nitrous bottle has to be removed unless your going to or from a racetrack, then the bottle can be installed, but has to remain disconnected

i've never been bothered, nor has anybody else around here either, there was only ever one guy that had a problem and he has a V8 ram with headers and straight pipe back to 5 inch tips, yeah it's loud, they warned him but never fined/made him remove it.
i would fight that.

Im a Xbox 360 fanboy...and damn proud of it!!
I plan on it...the ticket basically says that it is for an exhaust that exceeds noise limits. well where was his measuring tool? how can he say it exceeds a noise limit if he doesn't use a test device. and no, the human ear should not count, as everyones hearing is different. I can't hear over 14khz and most people can hear up to 18khz so human hearing should not be a sufficient tool for measuiring sound levels
what still pisses me off is that as i was pulled over a harley passed by that was ten times as loud as my car

bikers are excluded from all PA laws you retard. they can be as loud, rude, fast, careless, as they want too - duh!
theres been a new law for a while on exhaust now. there was like a 7 page thread on it a while back. basically anything modified other than stock is illegal. the cop does not need a db meter. bike laws are different. bikes are loud for a reason, to let people know they are there
i couldn't find that thread. its still bull that the cop can say its too loud without using a measuring device. Too loud is an opinion. and as far as the bike thing...if the judge says that to me..that its for safety so people know they are there..then i may just have to make some calls to the higher ups in the gov't who make the traffic laws because that is the lamest most horse@!#$ answer i have ever heard for letting bikes create noise pollution but cars can't.
whats really screwed up is that my brother just got his PA car inspector permit and in the classes he asked about aftermarket exhaust and all the teacher said was that as long as it has a cat, its good. just kinda messed up when an inspection station will pass a car with aftermarket exhaust, but the cops will stop you for it
i dunno, it just doesn't make sense that any modified exhaust is illegal. i want to know why its illegal. today its gonna be exhaust...tommorow...suspension, intakes, seats...the list goes on. soon putting on a new set of hubcaps will be illegal
edit: i found that old post...and it seems as if im screwed, it appears that even though its rediculous and retarded...the noise is based on the cops opinion. and its not being modified thats illegal, its being louder that is. soooooo on that note...anyone know what kind of aftermarket muffler is out there that is about as quiet as stock at 3k rpm or less?

THe biker law isn't stupid. I wouldn't want to be passing someone on a freeway and not have a loud exhaust. Cause you get allot of ppl. Especially older ppl that don't look just start turning without making sure the lane is empty. That is why the bikes have leway. Which I wouldn't want to be riding around and not have a vehicle hear me. The car is understandable about being a certian loudness. Just gotta watch how you drive it. especially in towns. That is the key. I must have missed that thread about the exhaust as well. how far back is it?
it was made sometime last year...just search for "pa exhaust ban"

Quote:
§ 175.105. Exhaust systems.
(2) The exhaust system of a vehicle may not be modified in a manner which will amplify or increase noise emitted by the motor of a vehicle above the maximum level permitted by Chapter 157 (relating to established sound levels).
Here is the table on chapter 157
Chapter 157
So there is a limit, he needed to record its DB level
...and since the cop did not use the proper recording equipment, I'd fight that ticket.
well...apparantly there has been a change to PA law that is not on the internet yet...apparantly the online version of the laws take longer...but they have taken away the requirement to have the noise level monitored, "too loud" is entirely at the discression of the officer...meaning that the ticket stands, I have to pay the $106.50 fine.
so stay away from whitehall PA (near pittsburgh) the cops hate modified cars

cops do not have quotas. i have a friend who is a cop and basically what it is is at the end of the month whoever has the highest in fines, everyone else has to have atleast 70% of that number in fines also. if one cop is under, hes gonna try and get you for whatever he can
^^ sounds like a quota to me if they have to hit 70%.

Remember....syringes go in the RED waste basket.
It's not an OFFICIAL quota (like car sales, etc.) but it certainly is a form of quota, IMHO. My brother-in-law is a state cop and we've had this discussion before...
mikec2003: not to thread-jack, but are you really EDITING your posts? If so, how are you DOING that? I must have missed a JBO feature along the way....
