P.A. tint law
Thursday, March 23, 2006 9:11 PM
Hey, everyone.
I know there's been a lot of questions and debates about what is legal and illegal. Here's the law straight from a cop's "book."

My friend and i both have 15% all around. I've been warned before, but didn't take it seriously, as most cops don't bother me. But, my friend got a ticket last week for $106 for his tint. Then at his work one afternoon a state trooper came in for a sandwich and they started talking. My friend asked him about the tint and the cop said it was legally too dark, but it really depends on the officer's opinion, and that he, himself, hated tint that was too dark.

Well, the cop showed my friend this book that he carries with him (i don't know if all cops carry it, some sort of law book, i don't know) and in the book it stated that the back three windows didn't matter, but the front two have to be visible enough to see the driver, legally. Like i stated before, some cops don't mind, but if you get a cop that does, you may get a ticket, as it is illegal. The cop said that a 35% tint on the fronts would be fine. So, i guess this week i'll be redoing it, lol! I'd rather redo it and not get hasseled.

Just thought i'd give everyone a heads up.

i would get 35% all the away around. if you have black interior it will make it look darker.

That site isn;t even accurate.

If you have a car it doesn;t matter you can't add aftermarket tint. The standard Soft Glo or Soft Ray Glass that is standard on vehicles is already at the required 73%. Anything added is illegal.

The part that is wrong is it talks about outside mirrors needing too. That only applies to SUVs Trucks and Vans. They can have everything behind the driver's compartment blacked out if they like as long as there are two outside mirriors with at least 19.5 square inches of reflective mirror surface.

www.pacode.com

Thats a better site and you have to cross reference.

also do a search its been discussed endless times for PA.

sightnsound: don't tell me to do a search. i know it's been discussed a lot. in fact, reread the first line of my post.

i was just saying what a state trooper told my friend. that they didn't really have a problem with back tint, just front.

or you could do like I do.....

I know the areas around my place where cops are idiots about tint. So, when I drive through those areas, I roll the windows down. Sounds dumb, but if they can't see it, they won't come after you usually.

Or you could have kept that to your self instead of adding even more confusion. Saying what you did clouds the issue and to some may belive it to seem ok because some cops may not hassle you.

All this leads to is more mis information.

Its Illegal, if people want to shoot craps and take a chance fine, but they shouldn't be saying they didn't know.

i just received a warning for this the other day (In PA) and this is been my second encounter. i've been warned both times that a cop could make me remove the tint and have been threatened with fines both times. the most recent cop told me that all aftermarket tint is illegal, BUT he did say if you do a light tint that you were able to see into the car with he said would be fine, the main problem they have is just being able to see inside and not wonder if somebody is going to pull a gun on them. i have 5% in my back three and doesnt really seem to matter, i still get hastled for it everytime.

and besides, lighter tint is the way to go anyways, dark tint = ghey. besides my fart cannon it's my biggest regret with that car.

Sad day that they are afraid of cars being tinted and not trucks and SUV's. Which I think is really ODD.

ok, i've been pulled over for my tint, i've talked to cops...

first and foremost, if they pull a tint meter on you in PA, 28% is the legal limit. i asked out of curiousity when he tested my window, so direct quote from a cop in Havertown, PA.

also, as it comes to what windows can be tinted, the windshield cannon be tinted beyond factory specs AT ALL. also the drivers and front seat passenger windows cannot be tinted beyond factory.

the rest of the car you can tint whatever the hell you want

I was just saying what I usually do. It was established well before my post that tint is illegal, so how did I cloud the issue? I see what you post on here and on Pittspeed and I have to ask, what is up your ass recently? Are you suddenly cool because you got a crotch rocket?

seriously dude, take it easy....

every police officer i have talked to said the back three didn't matter. but the front three you legally can't touch.

the tint shops around here won't even touch the front three no matter how much you pay them.

You sir and the cops have no clue what you are talking about.

**First off Tint is rated for how much light admitance there is. So if the cop is saying 28% is the legal limit he is trying to say that you only need 28% light admitance??? -Wrong

Correct Answer - Legal tint on passenger vehicles which are designated as "Cars" are allowed to have up to 70% Tint. Again that green soft glo on ALL OF YOUR WINDOWS REAR FRONT AND SO FORTH are already at 73% light addmitance or tinted to 73%. If the light meter reads below 70% (69% to 0% and your 28% would be in there) you are in violation. How do I know? I have access to one that cops use.

**Second there is a Table X (10) in the PA Code that has a break down per type of vehicle and the amount of tint. If you do not to the required cross referencing for exceptions. EXAMPLE: Trucks SUVs and Vans being allowed to have over 70% tint on windows behind the driver's compartment as long as they comply to the mirror requirements. If you do not do the cross referencing you are going to get the wrong impression.

Again the Mirror requirements only applies to Trucks SUV's and Cars. YOU MAY NOT ADD ADDITIONAL TINT TO PASSENGER CARS.

My responce was not to you. I thought I quoted the inital person again but didn't realize till now I didn't. I was refering to him posting what yet another cops states is in his "hand book" which is clearly wrong. Unfortunatly when people post "what a cop said", people take it as law and it ends up getting more and more distorted. Just like the "cops safety" comment. The issue of tint in PA is getting to be like a nightmare round of the telephone game. So you end up with rediculous amounts of distorted views.

Since you want to reference Pittspeed, go look up slow shelby's refusal to believe tint is illegal. I'm sure you have seen it.

On a side note, my "crotch rocket" as you put it has nothing to do with this post. Posts like these are rediculously irriating becasue no one reads and understands WHAT they are talking about.

So since you are going to make an asinine comment about my posts and their relation to being cool due to now owning a bike, I have one for you. Did my posts against making weed legal offend you? Thats the most recent heated public debate I had on Pittspeed with DS, so I'm assuming this is where you are getting you views from.

In the end I guess I'm just curious as to how you came up with such a brilliant association. Especially since I havn't flaunted the fact I got a bike on here or PS or made comments of how I'm supieror now because of it.

My only point was that there was no need to criticize what I said. If you were not criticizing me, then I apologize for my comments. As far as the weed debate, I have the same stance as you---I never read that on PS anyway, I go there for automotive info only (same reason I am here).

So again, if my comments were misdirected, then I apologize.

damn man, no reason to jump down my keyboard, i'm just telling you what a COP told me. usually when a badge tells me something, i usually don't have a reason to doubt what they're telling me, now maybe the info they gave me was the older rule, that was a year ago. so sue me, i was wrong i guess, my fault.

and this forum is to help people, not to critisize and belittle them, someone posts the wrong info, POLITELY tell them, don't act like someone lit the fuse on your tampon

damn man

See this right here is what I was refering to. Cops don't even know what they are talking about and this rule hasn't changed over a decade and a half aside from the fixing of wording issue about 2 years ago.
