Inspection w/ header ..tell me your experience
Monday, July 25, 2005 9:41 PM
Hey everyone...

as some of you may know my car has been in the body-shop for a while since the accident last year. It was well worth it...the new candy paint, the conversion..etc.

Well since my car was written off as totaled because it cost more to repair than the value of the car I have to get the car inspected before I can get rolling again.

The only thing I'm not sure of is having the car inspected with the Header.
Since I installed the RK 4-1 header I had to put a block off plate on the EGR. (Mind you my car is a 99 and I don't think it should've even came with one anyway..but oh well) Funny thing is I've gone through 2 MD Emission testings with an 02 sim and the header not one prob..lol

Bottom line...has anyone had their car inspected with an after-market header installed?
(I'm especially waiting to hear from PA people who get their cars inspected more often than MD)

If so what was the verdict?

Why wouldn't a 99 come with an EGR valve? They've been used for years now....

Anyways, I'm not sure how it in MD, but in MA (annual safety inspection, bi-annual emissions), they simply hook up the inspection computer and run all the OBD monitors (for OBD II vehicles, OBD I still gets the sniffer). If they all pass, you get a sticker, if not, they tell you why (normally not enough fuel in the tank, or not enough drive cycles for a monitor to run) and have you come back in a week or so.

I have a Pacesetter header on my car (1994), and it goes on the sniffer. I've always passed, with no problems.

The later model 99's didnt come with an EGR valve. It was a change made half way through the year. I have no idea the reasoning, this is just something I remember reading a while back.

Headers or a header which ever you prefer are not street leagal in M.D. Problem is
tho that no one can say if your car didn't come with one on not. take for example
the Mustang or Camaro or Corvette, all of these cars come from the factory with headers. So do cretain imports. So the poor shops that do the inspections have NO WAY of knowing which way your car came so they have to pass it.

Good luck.

Semper Fi SAINT. May you rest in peace.

Yeah James..the emmissions test heres is no prob.

Its just that this inspecction they are actually going to be looking for certain parts..ie the second 02 sensor, cat, etc.

But Im pretty confident that if PA people can pass inspection with them MD should be no prob.

From what Ive heard and Seen is PA is almost 10x more strict than here.

Thanks everyone.

it really does depend on where you go, cost me 221 today got oil change and inpection only items that didnt pass was a wiper blade and they said my reverse lights werent working so they replaced some switch that was 90 dollars? My wheel bearings are shot to the point of being unsafe to drive but they didnt catch that, prob too busy marveling at the wilwood brakes

i passed DC inspection...

hell they even open my hood, gathered around like it was pow wow time. DC is pretty strict. i;ve seen maryland inspection and they def dont check to see if your sun roof leaks or the brake force test...

the pacesetter header, i believe JDM cav said they are carb legal., which is one of the reasons that separates them from most all other headers...

it doesn't matter to much the egr is exhaust recirculation the small amount the gets receculated is small and so will be the effects

As with Acidburn, I'm from Pittsburgh, PA and my Full exhaust system passed with no CELs and using all the stock sensors. I did not need a O2 Sim (AKA resistor). If the exhaust is done right with a NA set up you shouldn't need an O2 sim. When you get into forced induction it may cause peoblems till you can get it set up correctly depending on how much you are pushing.....

The car passed emmissions no problem all the years I owned it with a cat back and full exhaust and the kid who just bought it July 1st still has no problems with CELs.

Well, I learned something new today...about the lack of EGR on later models (can you tell I'm a 2nd genner? )

In MA, they only do a visual inspection to make sure everything is there, regardless of if its aftermarket or not. I thought you were more concerned about emissions than visual. I guess you shouldn't have a problem then.

in maine as mlong as there is no cel light on you can pass , but maine state law also prohibs exhaust systems of 95 db and higher yet alot of the shows dont have a db reader so they pass it no problem when i was at a shop as long as there was no cel light and your exhaust had a silencer and everything else was ok you were good to go
