well thats no help! :/
i coulda told my self that.
i know ultimatly, it is really up to me.
im just at a IDK WHAT TO PICK point,
and im asking opinions. i know its JBO
and we all love our J's, so my guess is most
would say the cavy.
now, i had to chevy cavalier base models. both being
coupes, both being tan, and both with the 3speed auto.
the only option they did have was wing. this blue one
doesnt even have a wing....but it does have the better 4speed
auto.
ive driven many cavy's, i know how they handle, and know they are wicked nice
in the winter....at least mine was. and im used to having no options in my cars...
i have always loved cavaliers, from their looks and everything else. would love to
own another. [wish it had a spoiler tho........and an Eco, not the 2200SFI]
the eclipse. i have always loved the looks of 1999 eclipses.
and this one is fully loaded, even has leather. has options
i have never had in a car ever [keyless, sunroof, power windows/locks....]
so wow! upgrade??? just wish it had the 4g turbo motor...not the old dodge neon motor!
and this is a special edition, so worth a lil more??
the reason im looking at these with base model motors, is because..i cannot afford a nice low milage
sport model with the nicer engines.....im not looking to race any of them...maybe just some slight N/A mods.
and stuff for looks. just thinking basics, like intake, full exhaust, rims, tint, HID, lower....just make it look/sound good.
JDM tails....both cars have em.
well i know if it was up to me personally i would buy the cavalier . but thats just me , i dont need power options or a leather interior or anything to drive the price up . i say buy the cavalier and just swap a eco into it and your golden . good luck with whatever you buy .

do not have the skills, time or toold to eco swap....or i would just have fixed my car and done it,
and i dont NEED any of those options as well. im just saying, for $400 more, look at all what more im getting.
i mean, if someone would like to donate me an Eco, and help put it in...i would deff do that in a hearbeat!
but that wouldnt happen! haha, same thing with the eclipse! if someone wante dto give me a turbo motor,
i would jump on it! i mean other wise, if i have to buy a motor, and pay someone to swap it, i mite as well
go out and buy the car that already has one in it! ...which i dont have the money for. haha, so its a no-go either way!
now as ive said, ive driven cavaliers, and know alot aboutthem, how they handle and whatnot.
never drove a eclipse, dunno if they suck in winter, how they handle, any of that...gonn test drive this one
tho, to see how it drives.
not saying im not wanting the cav, and im not saying im leaning toward either car.
i am just saying for $400 more, you get all those options.
so its a hard choice. im a big GM fan, and i LOVE my cavaliers.
to me, they are veery attractive cars [although most would say they are generic looking]
i think they have style. i also really LOVE the wat eclipses look, also very good looking cars!
any other opinions?
eithe way cav or eclipse?
based on wether its just your opinion,
your looking at miles, or options, or price...
whatever it be, let me know guys!!!
I've worked on a lot of cavaliers in my day an a few dsm's. Hands down i would rather have a j, dsms are a pain in the ass. Here's another option for u.
03 5spd 2 dr base model with spoiler, 61k on new motor, recent clutch, $3,000

unless i put/ have someone i know or MY mechanic put in a new motor i will not trust the car.
saw that one, its silver, right? because, how often does that happen, a motor just fails for no reason?
more than likely, it was beat on or something, requiring it to be replaced. im not saying a motor cant fail on its
own, due to some unknown/natural/abnormal reason....just sayin it seems fishy....like i said, unless, im driving/owning
the car, and the engine fails, and i need to replace it..just very un-tustworthy of that.
have you worked on a DSM with the chrysler 420A motor from the dodge neons and avengers and other cars like that?
or just the 4g turbo motors? are the 420A's a biotch to work on too? dont seem like it, being its just a neon motor..?
its a basic little turd engine like the 2200SFI from what im told. strong, but lack of power. just like the 2200 cavy motor.
thats y im comparing the two, and seeing what is better.
most are saying the cav.
anyone a DSM fan here? lol
wanna get input from both sides.
and some good reasons on y to go either way.
kinda starting to poke around the DSM and eclipse forums as well.
so far its cav 2 eclipse 0.
and me still undecided!
most likely lookin at the cavy first then...then i will see what the eclipse is like later.
motors wise i would say i might still go with the cavs. if the gs has the 2.0 420a motor its a turd. i have to buddies that both have had one and they are both slow. one was a 5spd and the other an auto. only good motors are the 2.4 4g64 and 2.0turbo 4g63
The price on that cavy is WAY too @!#$ high.

haha, i know. its from a dealer tho....what do u expect?
if it was on the street, i would pay $3000 TOPS!!!
just for low milage, and good condition [judging condition on pics]
i think the eclipse is over priced too....had one just like it maual, with 10k less...$3000
...sold before i got to look at it tho!

only problem, cant find any 4g motored eclipses, with low milage, in good condition.
for under $5k....im kind of stuck on 1999's caz last year for that style, so prolly since newest, best condition.
and as for cav's.....from dealers...all the Eco cavs are going for $6-7k, and the LSS's are $8k!!!!
cant find anything decent with less than $70-80k with a good body for under $5k!!!!
In that price range?
A late 90's early 2000's mustang GT honestly.
Or an early 4th gen Camaro Z28.
Both might be higher miles, but better cars. (Maybe annoying in the winter, but nothing a person can't overcome, and if it's too nasty to get out with sandbags/good tires, you probably shouldn't be out period).
Or you could buy my car :p
'00 Z24 S/C
(120xxx+ miles though, it gets 100 mi/day).
j/k

camaro would be nice. i love those!
so does my GF....actually her dream car 2002 Z28...
just no way im drivin V8 RWD....
already got an S10...has a 2200...but still RWD.
sucks in snow, has weight and snow tires.
fun tho!
deff wanna 4cyl economy car, that i can have fun with, and make sporty.
never touching anything with over [my absolute max] 75-80k.
u know, the less the better, has to have a nice body too. good paint, no/minimal rust...
120k?!?!?! too many for me! my 2000 cavy has 70k on it! ...the S10 is a 2000 as well...
has 36k on it! hahahaha.
I know for a fact that the motor was changed, i did it, an i drove in the donor car with the 61k on it, old motor had a rod knocking but the car has hight miles on the body, doesn't really look it thou. If your interested in it get at me, yes i've also worked on the 420a motors. just how they put that motor in the 2nd gen makes it such a pain to work on. the same motor in a neon is twice as easy then in a dsm. I'd stick with what your familar with, u go switching brands, u start over with all that u've learned, yeah basics are the same, but wiring, suspension design, electrical is all differennt.
Neither of them. Yeah the cavalier has low miles but it's a 02 base model with an auto, so it sucks. The same story with eclipse. Save your money and buy a better car instead of buying a base model and trying to mod it.
The best deal I've seen in quite awhile was the 02 ls sport for 3k on here. That is a very good deal.
Why do you keep looking at dealers? The best deal on a car in this price range is going to be from a private seller, plus they will usually give you history on the car and have receipts and maintenance records. If you need a loan go to the bank and get one then start looking....

really the 410a is hard to work on in the eclipse?
more than the neon? ..my friend has a mid 90's neon SPORT
with the 420, andmy othe friend had [before he SRT-4 swapped] a 96 R/T
with is, and they said its hella easy to work on! what makes the eclipse so hard
to work on? smaller engine bay? more tighter compartment or something??
with everyones feedback, im looking more at the cavy!

they both have low miles
i dont have time to save money to buy a new car.
need one right now to replace my old cavy!
was the 02 LSS on JBO or craigslist?
was it in ohio? im not looking to drive to pick
up a car. its gotta be local. any info or link to it?
y look at dealers? reputation, a lil more trust,
stuff like that, i know there are some dealers out there
to rip you off..but i only go to reputable dealers, i have/family/friends
have done business with. also at the local dealership around here,
my dads sister used to work, and still has many connections. she doesnt
get GM pricing, because she did not retire, or even stay working there, she moved
on, but we still get a good chunk of change taken out! i just dont trust alot of private
sellers, you dont know what they are selling, u know? may run good, but can fall apart
a week after you buy it!!!!! and then your screwed!
but just a fyi, the eclispe im lookin at IS from a private seller, not a dealer.
and the cavy is from a local no-name type dealer [like joes auto sales....
something along those lines] i dont fully trust the small dealership, nor
the private seller, but i gotta get a car soon! lol.
no way im pulling out a loan on a used car either. just seams silly to me.
Autotragic.
88k miles is NOT high these days...
If you haven't figured it out yet, getting something with <80k miles in the price range you're looking at will get you a bargain basement absolutely base model really...
I've told my cousin that I'd let my J go for ~$3000
which is a bit high for 120k miles, but it's boosted, rear wheel disk conversion and full exhaust
And I'd have to replace it right away
And that's just how much it would take for me to be able to sell it.
Still, you should be able to get something pretty nice (Z24, ecotec w/ decent options) in the 4-5000 range if you don't mind the mileage being closer to 90-95k
Especially the ecotecs, I wouldn't be afraid of 95-100k miles on one of those.
Obviously it's your money, so you get what you want, but I wonder if you're expectations are a bit high -- either that or you're willing to settle for something that you might not like as much. Just my opinion -- free at that, so it's worth exactly that much :p
-------------------------------------------------
Sleeper style, they don't see it coming that way.
i would have sold you my ls sport for 2700 lol.

i fully am aware that a car with 100+k isn that much in todays standards, its just that, with a lower milage vehicle, you get more life
out of it than you would with one with 100k on it.....like one with 35k will last me plenty long before something goes, or needs replaced/fixed. - well i should say under normal conditions....i know there are things that can happen even to a brand new car....im just saying, this car i want to keep for some time, work on, make it look good. im not looking for a car to buy, and then in a couple years sell, junk, or trade in. so the lower the miles the better....but i only have so much money to work with! my expectations mite be a little high, with this crappy economy....because last year i could get a 2200SFI caavlier from dealers for around $3-4k...now they are going for $4-5...some even $6k. ....with eco's being even higher than that! im just sayin that last year, i coulda got one with under 80k for under $5k!
Ben (DirtyJ) wrote:i would have sold you my ls sport for 2700 lol.
like i said, great price. but how far away are you? ohio/kentucky border is a lil
far for me to buy a car. the furthest i have driven to look at a car is about an hour
to an hour and a half. plus i look locally, because i know some things about cars.
but i dont know everything. so i, not saying i dont trust you, but i would wanna take
it to my mechanic, and to my friends auto body place to see what they both can tell me.
even the 88k on that 05 sport non LS was a lil on the high side for me, as i told you between
75-80k is my limit of what i will buy a used car at. and you were in the 90's. $2,700 is a great
price. and deff lookin into Eco's the most!
Just because a car has under 80k doesnt mean anything IMO. You can have a young kid who beats the @!#$ out of it for 80k miles or someone who takes care of a car for 100k miles. To me it all depends on the car, you can usually tell if it has been taken care of or beat on. Pretty ignorant to say 'you get alot more life out of a car with lower miles'. Low mile cars break just like higher mileage ones. Doesnt seem like you know much, probably listening to what your parents or others say. good luck with that.
Mine isn't technically on the market, but I'd make you a better deal than that blue one. Not near Cleveland though.
Insurance would most likely be cheaper with the cavalier. Both cars will do fine in the winter, being FWD and all. The eclipse will hold it's value for longer though. Besides, later on down the road you could always do an engine swap and put in a turbo dsm motor.
I'd check into the details of the previous owner for the eclipse though. Something about the car says "Teen driver beat on me" IMO.
$3,200 for my 4-door????
"I've got veins, that carry blood all over my bady"
I have an 03 LS Sport Cav.
Also have a 92 Eagle Talon TSI AWD as well as a 94 Eagle Talon TSI AWD.
If you find an unmolested DSM, they are great. If you like working on cars, even better!
The 420a isn't a bad motor. Not as power-gifted but doesn't break @!#$ like the 4g63 does!
I'd say Eclipse just because it'll beat the 2200
