Are there any major differences between the 98 and 99 2.4l block?
Physically looking at the two, I do see a difference.. The 98 takes a different knock sensor than the 99.. The coolant hole for the thermostat housing in the back of the block is different(looking inside the hole)...
As far as specs, is there a difference between the two?
Anybody have a 99+ block for sale? Im going to do a rebuild unfortunately.

what coolant hole? and mitdr774 seems to be pretty knowledgeable about the 2.4 might ask him and throw this post up in either 3rd gen or performance if you haven't already.
Like above, the housiing that attaches to the back of the block.. Where The triangle gasket attaches to the back of the block.

gave it to md_ld9. two blocks actually one was good the other was iffy. also i must have over looked the difference in size of that. actually they call for the same water pump. clyde said the heads were different to but i never actually measured. just tore apart and scraped.
i know they changed between 99 and 2000 but i didnt think they did between 98 and 99
actually mid 99 they changed. thats y most people just call out 00+ block than 99.
gotcha ...
gotta love GM's mid year crap... they did that in 02 as well
JR.. Yea MIke told me the main difference is the KNock and the head on the 2.4 block.. I placed my 99 gasket on the 98 block and the water jackets are different.. Now im looking for a block, more so a crank that isnt scratched up.. I can use my 99 block, but we'd rather start with a fresh one..
Jason, yea man, gotta rebuild it.. I dont want to, nor have the money.. But oh well..

on the block that was better the crank had been turned. when i gave it to mike i told him that he would have to tear it down and inspect it because it sound like it had a knock but sounded different than the rod knock. not trying to discourage, just trying to inform.
damn dave, if you had an eco i have 3 cranks hanging in my basement..lol

The 99 LD9 doesnt have a EGr valve either, as well as the compression ratio is higher in the second half of the 99 LD9 run....early is 9.5:1 and the second is 9.7:1, the head on the second half is a lil better flowing as well
