Yesterday I was thinking to myself when my cavy dies maybe I will get a cobalt ss. Then I thought why do that when I can buy a ss cobalt motor ready to be thrown into my car for $3400 vs $24,000.
the only tricky part is that the cobalt ss's steering is all electronically controlled....i cant remember what someone told me but it might get tricky....let me know if you get it done
oh this won't be for a long time hopefully lol. right now i got about 47k on my ecotec
first of all the $3400 for the supercharged 2.0 ecotec is for just the bare motor and supercharger. there are alot of other components that dont come with that, such as the water and fuel pumps, ECU, etc... that would run you quite a bit more. not to mention you would probably have to swap the transmission too.... and like juggalo suggested, the electronics on the SS cobalt are much more complex than on the cavalier, it would take quite a bit of time and money to get it working even close to as good as the cobalts. unless you have friends who work on the cobalt assembly line and know how to build the electronics on them, i wouldnt find the swap to be worth it. not to mention, the interior and suspension on the cobalt is soo much more refined than the cavaliers, that its an all out better car. so i think it would be more than worth it to just trade in the cavalier for the cobalt.
^ All of what Adam said. The Cobalt suspension wise is so much better than the Cavalier. Another thing is you have the option of a LSD which is a must in a FWD car....

by the way.. sorry if i came off kinda critical of your idea. its a good idea, and the only reason i even had a response to your idea is because i already considered it and weighed out the options. i basically came to the conclusion that i was better off either keeping the 2.2 ecotec and boosting it, or trading in the cavalier for the SS cobalt when its paid off.
oh its ok I din't think you were being critical. I was just thinking about getting the ss motor when my cavy motor blows because I'm putting all this money into it.
just supercharge to motor you have now
2000 Camaro V6.

IT would be pretty sweet though, sleeper style. Im all about the sleeper look.
That motor is almost a direct drop in. It's a EcoTec 2.2, destroked to 2.0 and supercharged. All the connectors are the same. The tranny bolt patter is the same (all 4cyl and 6cyl up to 3.8 are the same). Your old ps pump could be swapped. It's probably not nearly as much work as you think it is. Hard work, yes; trouble, depends on who you ask.
Also, you can get the destroking kit from GM for your engine, add the same supercharger (again from GM). Only need to reprogram your computer, and maybe a few other things (not sure about the fuel injectors for instance).
As for the huge advancements in the Cobolt. Other than looks there are no huge advancements. The suspension is designed just like ours, few changes here and there; but it's not like they went to double-wishbone on all four corners or something.
Ummm... how about the 200% better build quality. The car is beautiful inside and out. How many time have we all complained about the "cheap" interior of the J? The Cobalt's quality is FAR supior.
But my question is why buy a Cobalt SS when you can get a Solstice?

Performance cars do not win car shows and show cars do not win races.
It's up to you to decide which you'd rather win.
true the solstice looks very mean with that rks sport body kit i think it was or maybe it was lmperformance. The reason I started this whole why cobalt was I have fallen very much for my cavy I used to have a 1995 formula and I actually liked my cavy overall better. but I was looking on gm performance and you could be the ecotec supercharger engine for 2999 I think i don't remmber so I was like hey when my car starts to die I was thinking should I just put a better engine in my car or buy a new car for 25,000-30,000?
looks... hahah .... the delta platform that the cobalt is derived on was formulated from the .... TOYOTA ECHO ... which is like toyota's bottom end car...
Ive had a chance to test drive a cobalt... i thought the interior was ugly, the body looks like a honda civic... the massive difference in tail lights between a 2 door and a 4 door makes the car uglyer... the 2 door tail lights aren't too bad... kinda an Lexus IS 300 (which again is a TOYOTA product) rip off w/o the altezzas... but the 4 door lights are horrible... the plastic cover on the engine makes the engine look uglier as well... The eco has a very decent looking valve cover... there is no need for useless plastic...
Finally...
my STOCK 2000 Z24 dusted a 4 door Cobalt LS....
still a disgrace of a car to follow the line of the j -body... *THUMBS DOWN*
I agree I think the best looking feature the cobalt has going for itself if the ss trim interior. I think the cobalt front does look like a rsx/ civic also.

wow, so you beat a car with a 2.2 eco... congrats
I say buy the SS. just think, even though turboing your own car would be an experience, how long do you expect it to last. 50,000 miles 100,000 miles. the SS was made to do what it does. nothing aftermarket about it. but theres always the argument which is better...... make a slow car fast or just buy a faster car......
