anyone have experience buying a car from out of state, and driving it back home?
more specifically, someone from OH is coming to NY to buy my car. I know insurance will have to be put on the car before it is driven away, but how do temp plates/registration work? Would we need to get them fron NY, from OH, does it matter?
How can he legally drive the car back from NY to OH without worrying about not having any tags on it?
any input is appreciated.
a detailed bill of sale, dont worry about a plate.. they can just slap any plate on it just to be safe but just a bill of sale

^ I agree, but if he's really worried about it mail him your title so he can go get it registered and with tags so he can drive it back with them.

When I sell a car, It is their job to figure that out. Gimme monies, I give you keys.
Other than that......idk..
did you try contacting the DMV or even the state police. thats what i did when i bought a car in WI, talked to the ISP AND WSP they both said as long as there is a bill of sale on the car then its fine. as well as insurance.
but it may be different for different states.
Have the bill of sale. I always take some plates along with me just to put them on. That is all he needs.
you can get 1 way passes from the dmv or state police. not sure if you need to contact to or from state though.
I think you need an inspection to get it road legal.
I asked a friend about this once because I know he's done it.
He told me that with the bill of sale you can get a temp tag from the BMV. I believe then he said once you get the actual title for the car you can get scheduled for an inspection, which is a joke. He said they basically walk around the car and make sure it's not physically messed up, and that it has turn signals... junk like that. Once it passes inspection and they approve it then you can get an Ohio title for it.
Kind of a PITA as far as the steps you gotta take, but works out pretty easy I guess.
i find it amusing that SHOoff has nothing better to do but follow me around & be an unhelpful dick in even cross-forum. - Jon Mick
Once you have the title, the car needs to be inspected, all they do is look at the vin and mileage...
After that you can register the car and get the ohio title.
Wheres the guy whos buying it from?
Out here in Virginia my step-father has gotten temporary travel permits from DMV, they're like $5?... I believe they're good for a couple of days.
i allways went downtown were we get our tags at and told them im buying a car out of town show them the bill of sale and got a temp tag
Oh, did he finally get the cash, and sell his cav.
